Where to get an International Driving Permit in Solomon Islands?

Obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Solomon Islands is straightforward if you hold a valid Solomon Islands national driver's license. For those planning a visit to Solomon Islands, it is advisable to contact the relevant authority in your home country to secure an IDP before departure. However, if you are already traveling and do not possess the IDP, you may opt to have your national driver's license translated online. This method offers a quicker, more convenient, and efficient way to ensure you can legally drive during your travels.

The International Driving Permit is a translation of the national driving license into many languages. The first ID cards appeared in 1926, after the Paris International Convention relative to Motor Traffic. The International Driving Permit was also influenced by two other conventions in 1949 and 1968. The International Driving Permit is the same as the International Driving License.

We remind you that the IDP works only with a valid national license.

How to get an International Driving Permit in Solomon Islands?

According to the Vienna Convention of 1968, International Driving Permits (IDPs) are authorized to be issued by national governments or designated organizations. In most countries, this function is carried out by automobile associations affiliated with the AIT/FIA, the police, or other authorized entities. To obtain an International Driving Permit in Solomon Islands, you must possess a local license and apply to the relevant authorities here (please notify us if the link is not working). The cost and processing time for an IDP vary by country.

If you hold a national license not issued in Solomon Islands, you must verify if your license permits you to drive and if you require an IDP. If an IDP is necessary, the only option is to order a translation of your driver's license, available either via delivery or as an electronic version (confirm with the rental car company if an electronic version is acceptable), for example, through our services.

For U.S. citizens with only a U.S. driver's license, you can obtain an IDP from AAA, but it must be done before traveling to Solomon Islands!

Driving in Solomon Islands: key facts

QuestionAnswer
Side of the roadLeft
International Driving Permit (IDP)Not required for 231 of the 240 origin licences, 9 of which have no established rule β€” see the row for your country of issue, in the table below
UN Road Traffic ConventionsParty to neither convention
Time limit for visitorsYou may drive on a valid overseas driving licence for a maximum of 4 months, whatever country issued it.
Minimum age18 to drive (unverified) β€” no Solomon Islands government source states a minimum driving age
Alcohol limitNo blood-alcohol limit could be verified from any Solomon Islands government source; the commonly repeated 0.08% figure traces only to commercial IDP websites and is not confirmed.
Speed limitsDrive on the left (Government of Canada, verbatim: "Traffic drives on the left."). No statutory speed limits could be verified from an official Solomon Islands source β€” obey posted signs and slow right down for potholes, collapsed bridges, unlit sections, pedestrians and animals. Avoid driving after dark.
Emergency numberPolice: 999. Fire: 988. Ambulance: 111 (UK FCDO) or 911 (Government of Canada) β€” both numbers are officially published, so try both. Search and rescue: 977. Police and medical resources are limited, especially outside Honiara.

Do you need an International Driving Permit in Solomon Islands?

Solomon Islands is a party to neither the 1949 Geneva nor the 1968 Vienna road-traffic convention (checked against the UN Treaty Collection participant tables on 2026-07-29), so no IDP edition has any legal force there and no IDP type can be listed. The national licensing authority β€” the Inland Revenue Division (IRD) of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury β€” states in its official guide: "You can drive on your overseas licence in Solomon Islands for a maximum period of 4 months only." Neither that guide nor application form TR07 mentions an International Driving Permit at all. An IDP is therefore optional: useful only as an English-language companion booklet for a licence that is not in the Latin script, and for rental desks and police who may not read your home licence.

  • Tourists and short-term visitors: carry your national licence together with the document named in the row for your country of issue, in the table below β€” for most origin licences that document is not an IDP, so read your own answer rather than assuming one.
  • Car renters: Government advice is not unanimous, so plan for the stricter reading. The Government of Canada tells travellers flatly: "Traffic drives on the left. You must obtain a local driver's licence to drive in the Solomon Islands." Its own 'Applying for a local licence' link points at the Solomon Islands IRD, whose current guide allows the 4-month overseas-licence window β€” so the Canadian wording appears to overstate the rule. Rental firms and police may still expect a local or visitor licence; ask the rental operator in advance.

No specific penalty for driving without the required document was verified from an authoritative source. Official source.

What side of the road does Solomon Islands drive on?

Solomon Islands drives on the left-hand side of the road, and overtaking is done on the right. Cars in Solomon Islands are right-hand drive.

How long can you drive in Solomon Islands with a foreign licence?

You may drive on a valid overseas driving licence for a maximum of 4 months, whatever country issued it. Note that an overseas provisional/learner licence does not qualify β€” the IRD guide states "If you hold an overseas provisional licence you will have to gain a Solomon Island licence and follow normal process to get a full licence". (Inland Revenue Division β€” A Guide to Obtaining a Driver's Licence (published on ird.gov.sb, Transport Licensing))

Planning to move to Solomon Islands? Different rules apply once you become a resident β€” see the residents section below.

Is Solomon Islands a party to the 1949 or 1968 Road Traffic Convention?

Solomon Islands is party to neither the 1949 Geneva Convention nor the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. An official convention IDP cannot be issued in Solomon Islands, and convention rules do not bind it β€” licence acceptance is governed purely by local law and bilateral arrangements.

Why acceptance of your licence varies from place to place

Whether a foreign country accepts your driving licence hangs on a tangle of variables: three different road-traffic conventions signed decades apart (1926, 1949, 1968) β€” the oldest predates the United Nations itself, and only the latter two were concluded under it β€” countries at different stages of joining each (signed vs. accepted vs. ratified), licences printed in alphabets local police can't read, vehicle-category systems that don't line up between countries, document generations that may not meet a convention's format even when the country is a member, bilateral deals between individual states, and local laws that are looser in one place and stricter in the next. The same licence can be fine at one border and rejected at the next β€” even at the next rental desk. The International Driving Permit exists to cut through most of it: a standardized, multilingual presentation of your existing licence, with harmonized category symbols, that most officials can read at a glance. It doesn't replace your national licence or grant new rights β€” you carry both β€” and it doesn't guarantee acceptance: a handful of destinations still require a local permit alongside or instead of it, but for most it meaningfully improves your odds.

Can you drive in Solomon Islands with your country's licence?

This table is for tourists and temporary visitors. Moving to Solomon Islands as a resident? Different rules apply β€” see the residents section below. Find your licence's country of issue below. Solomon Islands lets you drive on your existing overseas driving licence for a maximum of 4 months, whatever country issued it β€” the national licensing authority states the rule for a valid licence "from another country", with no approved-country list and no reciprocity condition. The country is a party to neither road-traffic convention, so an International Driving Permit has no legal standing there; it is worth carrying only as an English-language companion to a licence that is not in the Latin script. An overseas learner or provisional licence does not count. Stay longer than 4 months and you need a Solomon Islands licence β€” which a full overseas licence converts into at the Inland Revenue Division with no driving test. Rules change β€” confirm with official sources before you travel. Last verified: July 2026.

Legend: "1949" β€” Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (IDP valid up to 1 year); "1968" β€” Vienna Convention (IDP valid up to 3 years).

Sources and notes for the table above

[1] Inland Revenue Division (Ministry of Finance and Treasury), A Guide to Obtaining a Driver's Licence: "If you already have a valid driver's licence from another country a Solomon Island licence can be issued to you. You can drive on your overseas licence in Solomon Islands for a maximum period of 4 months only." Corroborated independently by UK FCDO: "You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in the Solomon Islands for up to 4 months."

[a] Licence categories do not follow the convention A–E scheme β€” rental staff may ask for an IDP to map them.

[b] IDD = International Driver's Document, a standardized translation of your national driving licence. You can apply here: https://idaoffice.org/apply-now/.

Where to get an International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit must be obtained before you travel, and only certain countries may issue one to you β€” you cannot buy an official IDP from an unrelated country. Under the 1968 Vienna Convention it may be issued only by the Contracting Party where you normally reside and which issued or recognizes your licence β€” by that Party's competent authority or by an association it has duly empowered. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention it is issued by the competent authority of a Contracting State, or by an association that authority has duly empowered. Which body that is varies by country: a government agency in some, an authorized motoring club in others.

  • Travelling from another country? Ask that country's driving-licence authority which body it authorizes to issue IDPs β€” a government agency in some countries, an authorized motoring club in others.

Separately, IDA offers a digital International Driver's Document β€” a translation of your national licence that you carry alongside it. It is not an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 or 1968 conventions by the body your country authorizes for that purpose, and it is not a certified, sworn or otherwise official translation: no authority certifies it, and where a country requires an official or certified translation by law, our document does not satisfy that requirement. It is a private translation meant to make your national licence readable at rental desks and roadside checks.

Moving to Solomon Islands? Rules for new residents

Anyone staying beyond the 4-month overseas-licence window must hold a Solomon Islands driver licence. The IRD (Inland Revenue Division, Ministry of Finance and Treasury) is the licensing authority; the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) runs the driving tests. IRD also lists "Visitor or temporary licences" among its driver-licensing services. Official source.

Driving rules in Solomon Islands tourists get fined for

  • Mandatory equipment: Carry your overseas driving licence, passport, and the rental agreement, registration and insurance papers, and use seat belts where fitted. Note: this is general good practice, not a Solomon Islands statutory carry-list β€” no official equipment or documents schedule could be verified online.
  • Drink-driving: No blood-alcohol limit could be verified from any Solomon Islands government source; the commonly repeated 0.08% figure traces only to commercial IDP websites and is not confirmed. Treat drink-driving as prohibited and drive completely sober. No verified penalty tariff. Drink-driving is an offence under Solomon Islands transport legislation and can bring police action, prosecution, licence loss and voided insurance, but no current consolidated figure is publicly retrievable.
  • Speed limits: Drive on the left (Government of Canada, verbatim: "Traffic drives on the left."). No statutory speed limits could be verified from an official Solomon Islands source β€” obey posted signs and slow right down for potholes, collapsed bridges, unlit sections, pedestrians and animals. Avoid driving after dark.
  • The 4-month allowance is a general national rule, not a UK bilateral privilege β€” the Solomon Islands IRD applies it to a valid driver's licence "from another country" without naming any approved countries, and the UK FCDO's separate "up to 4 months" statement for UK photocards matches it exactly.
  • Government advice is not unanimous, so plan for the stricter reading.
  • Roads are few and poor. UK FCDO, verbatim: "There are few roads in the Solomon Islands. Most of these are on Guadalcanal and Malaita. Many roads are heavily pot-holed and some bridges have collapsed. Pedestrians and animals are often on the roads, which are poorly lit and hazardous at night." Canada adds that four-wheel-drive vehicles are necessary and that conditions worsen in the rainy season.
  • Crash risk is high and the scene rules are strict. UK FCDO, verbatim: "Accidents are frequent, due to speeding, low standards of driving and poor vehicle maintenance. Be especially careful when overtaking, as drivers and passengers in fast-moving vehicles may open the doors to spit betel nut on to the road." And: "You must stay at the scene of a road accident until the police arrive. If it is not safe to wait, drive to the nearest police station".
  • If you will be there longer than 4 months, start the conversion early and in person β€” IRD captures your photo and signature itself: "Do not send someone to do this for you".
