Do you need an International Driving Permit in Qatar?

Qatar acceded to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic on 6 March 2013 and is not a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention, so the 1968 IDP is the correct booklet. UK guidance tells visitors without a Qatari licence to carry both the 1968 IDP and the original domestic licence in the car. Canadian government guidance is more granular: a foreign national licence alone is accepted for the first 7 days after entry, and an IDP is required to drive beyond 7 days. Treat the IDP as required in practice from arrival: the two governments differ only on the length of the licence-only grace window, not on whether the IDP is needed. Qatar's own traffic law text and Ministry of Interior licensing pages could not be retrieved (see open questions), so the national recognition norm behind these statements is unverified.

How long can you drive in Qatar with a foreign licence?

Two different figures are in play and they are not the same clock. Canadian government guidance: a foreign national licence alone is good for 7 days from entry, and an International Driving Permit is required to drive beyond 7 days. UK guidance: carry the 1968 IDP with the original licence, and 'to drive for longer than 6 months you'll need to apply for a Qatari driving licence'. Canada attaches that same six-month figure to new residents, not to tourists. Safe reading for a visitor: home licence alone only for the first week, 1968 IDP plus original licence thereafter, and in no case beyond the validity of the visa/stay or six months. Why acceptance of your licence varies from place to place

Whether a foreign country accepts your driving licence hangs on a tangle of variables: three different road-traffic conventions signed decades apart (1926, 1949, 1968) — the oldest predates the United Nations itself, and only the latter two were concluded under it — countries at different stages of joining each (signed vs. accepted vs. ratified), licences printed in alphabets local police can't read, vehicle-category systems that don't line up between countries, document generations that may not meet a convention's format even when the country is a member, bilateral deals between individual states, and local laws that are looser in one place and stricter in the next. The same licence can be fine at one border and rejected at the next — even at the next rental desk. The International Driving Permit exists to cut through most of it: a standardized, multilingual presentation of your existing licence, with harmonized category symbols, that most officials can read at a glance. It doesn't replace your national licence or grant new rights — you carry both — and it doesn't guarantee acceptance: a handful of destinations still require a local permit alongside or instead of it, but for most it meaningfully improves your odds.

Can you drive in Qatar with your country's licence?

The often-quoted six-month figure is the deadline for obtaining a Qatari licence and, in Canadian guidance, attaches to new residents rather than tourists. Where to get an International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit must be obtained before you travel, and only certain countries may issue one to you — you cannot buy an official IDP from an unrelated country. Under the 1968 Vienna Convention it may be issued only by the Contracting Party where you normally reside and which issued or recognizes your licence — by that Party's competent authority or by an association it has duly empowered. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention it is issued by the competent authority of a Contracting State, or by an association that authority has duly empowered. Which body that is varies by country: a government agency in some, an authorized motoring club in others.

• Travelling from Qatar? Qatar's official IDPs are issued by Qatar Automobile and Touring Club (QATC). Official site.
• Travelling from another country? Ask that country's driving-licence authority which body it authorizes to issue IDPs — a government agency in some countries, an authorized motoring club in others.

Separately, IDA offers a digital International Driver's Document — a translation of your national licence that you carry alongside it. It is not an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 or 1968 conventions by the body your country authorizes for that purpose, and it is not a certified, sworn or otherwise official translation: no authority certifies it, and where a country requires an official or certified translation by law, our document does not satisfy that requirement. It is a private translation meant to make your national licence readable at rental desks and roadside checks.

Moving to Qatar? Rules for new residents

Separate clock from the visitor one. New residents may drive on an International Driving Permit for a maximum of six months from arrival, and must convert to a Qatari licence within that period. The 'six months' figure that appears in UK guidance is this residence clock, not a tourist entitlement. Official source.

Driving rules in Qatar tourists get fined for

• Mandatory equipment: Hand-held mobile phone use while driving is illegal and attracts a QAR 500 fine (UK FCDO, verbatim). Seat-belt use and desert-travel precautions (properly equipped 4x4, water, communications, travel in convoy) are standard advice but were not separately verified against a Qatari source on 29 July 2026.
• Drink-driving: Zero tolerance. Do not drive after consuming any alcohol. Drink-driving is punished by a prison sentence of between one month and 3 years, or a fine of QAR 10,000 to QAR 50,000, or both. Offenders may also be deported. (UK FCDO, verbatim).
• Speed limits: Traffic drives on the right. Posted limits are in km/h and camera enforcement is heavy; specific limit values were not verified against a Qatari source on 29 July 2026.
• If you do not hold a Qatari licence, carry both the 1968 IDP and your original domestic driving licence in the vehicle.
• Report any accident on the METRASH application. Leaving the scene without reporting it is illegal. If nobody is injured and it is safe to do so, move the vehicle out of the traffic flow.
• 'Road discipline is very poor; speeds are high and accidents are common.' Drive defensively.
• corrected/downgraded: the earlier claim that a flash of headlights means the other driver is coming through rather than yielding does not appear in UK guidance and was mis-attributed. Retained only as unsourced local folklore — do not present it as official guidance.
