Driving in Ecuador: key facts

Do you need an International Driving Permit in Ecuador?

No IDP is legally required. Reglamento a la LOTTTSV (Decreto Ejecutivo 1196) art. 137 lets any foreigner drive on the licence issued in their country of origin for the permitted period. An IDP matters in two ways: art. 138 requires a translation when the licence is not in Spanish, and art. 140 lets a foreigner elect the regime of an international convention instead of the domestic one. Ecuador acceded to the 1949 Geneva Convention on 26 September 1962 and only signed (never ratified) the 1968 Vienna Convention, so only a genuine 1949-format IDP is on point. An IDP never replaces the original licence, and hire companies commonly demand one anyway.

How long can you drive in Ecuador with a foreign licence?

Reglamento art. 137 sets four limbs. Foreigners entering on a tourist visa or any non-immigrant visa may drive on the licence issued in their country of origin for the whole stay their immigration status allows, but in no case more than six months counted from entry. Foreigners entering on an immigrant visa may drive on the home licence for a maximum of six months from entry. Foreigners the State does not require a visa from may drive on the home licence for the period of stay granted at entry, provided the licence is in force — this limb carries no express six-month cap. Ecuadorians resident abroad get six months from entry. Once those periods expire nobody may keep driving without exchanging the foreign licence for the Ecuadorian equivalent (art. 94 of the Law). Ecuador is a Contracting Party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, but not to the 1968 Vienna Convention.

Why acceptance of your licence varies from place to place

Whether a foreign country accepts your driving licence hangs on a tangle of variables: three different road-traffic conventions signed decades apart (1926, 1949, 1968) — the oldest predates the United Nations itself, and only the latter two were concluded under it — countries at different stages of joining each (signed vs. accepted vs. ratified), licences printed in alphabets local police can't read, vehicle-category systems that don't line up between countries, document generations that may not meet a convention's format even when the country is a member, bilateral deals between individual states, and local laws that are looser in one place and stricter in the next. The same licence can be fine at one border and rejected at the next — even at the next rental desk. The International Driving Permit exists to cut through most of it: a standardized, multilingual presentation of your existing licence, with harmonized category symbols, that most officials can read at a glance. It doesn't replace your national licence or grant new rights — you carry both — and it doesn't guarantee acceptance: a handful of destinations still require a local permit alongside or instead of it, but for most it meaningfully improves your odds.

Can you drive in Ecuador with your country's licence?

Ecuador recognises the national driving licence of every country: art. 137 of the Reglamento to the Land Transport Law lets a foreigner drive on the licence issued in their country of origin for up to six months from entry — or, if no visa was required for entry, for the stay granted at the border. No IDP is legally required. What is required is the original licence, the passport showing the visa or entry stamp, and, if the licence is not in Spanish, an official translation; a genuine 1949 Geneva IDP is the customary way to satisfy that. Miss any of those and it is a sixth-class contravention. Residents run on the same six-month clock and must then exchange for an Ecuadorian licence. Where to get an International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit must be obtained before you travel, and only certain countries may issue one to you — you cannot buy an official IDP from an unrelated country. Under the 1968 Vienna Convention it may be issued only by the Contracting Party where you normally reside and which issued or recognizes your licence — by that Party's competent authority or by an association it has duly empowered. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention it is issued by the competent authority of a Contracting State, or by an association that authority has duly empowered. Which body that is varies by country: a government agency in some, an authorized motoring club in others.

• Travelling from another country? Ask that country's driving-licence authority which body it authorizes to issue IDPs — a government agency in some countries, an authorized motoring club in others.

Separately, IDA offers a digital International Driver's Document — a translation of your national licence that you carry alongside it. It is not an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 or 1968 conventions by the body your country authorizes for that purpose, and it is not a certified, sworn or otherwise official translation: no authority certifies it, and where a country requires an official or certified translation by law, our document does not satisfy that requirement. It is a private translation meant to make your national licence readable at rental desks and roadside checks.

Moving to Ecuador? Rules for new residents

The resident clock is the same six-month clock, not a separate one. A foreigner entering on an immigrant (residence) visa may drive on the valid foreign licence for a maximum of six months counted from entry; an Ecuadorian resident abroad likewise gets six months. After that, art. 137 forbids driving until the foreign licence has been exchanged for the Ecuadorian equivalent under art. 94 of the LOTTTSV. Driving rules in Ecuador tourists get fined for

• Mandatory equipment: Reglamento art. 170 requires every motor vehicle to carry a first-aid kit, a basic tool kit, an operable spare tyre with wheel wrench and jack, a fire extinguisher and two reflective safety triangles. Seat belts must be worn at all times, children under 12 (or too small for the belt) must travel in the rear seats (art. 277), and motorcycle riders and passengers need a homologated helmet plus retro-reflective clothing (art. 300).
• Drink-driving: COIP art. 385 sets a graduated criminal scale for private drivers: 0.3 to 0.8 g of alcohol per litre of blood — 1 SBU fine, 5 licence points and 5 days' detention; over 0.8 up to 1.2 g/l — 2 SBU, 10 points and 15 days; above 1.2 g/l — 3 SBU, 60-day licence suspension and 30 days. Drivers of public, commercial or freight transport have a 0.1 g/l ceiling and zero tolerance for narcotics. Treat the safe limit as zero. Fines are indexed to the unified basic salary (SBU), USD 482 for 2026: roughly USD 482 / 964 / 1,446 for the three bands, plus point loss, detention and 24-hour vehicle impoundment as a preventive measure. Driving under the influence of narcotics is 15 points and 30 days' detention (COIP art. 384).
• Speed limits: Drive on the right. Reglamento art. 191 limits for light vehicles: 50 km/h urban, 90 km/h on ring roads (perimetral), 100 km/h on highway straights and 60 km/h on highway curves (70 km/h on curves in the Costa region); 20 km/h in school zones. Exceeding the 'moderate range' above those limits is a first-class contravention under COIP art. 386.3.
• Art. 138 makes the passport mandatory, not optional: a driver using a foreign licence must carry the passport showing the visa or the entry stamp so the officer can check that the art. 137 period is still running. Driving without it is a sixth-class contravention (COIP art. 391.21).
• If the licence is not in Spanish, carry the required translation. Art. 140 also lets a foreigner elect the regime of an international convention Ecuador has signed instead of the domestic rules — the legal hook for using a 1949 Geneva IDP with the original licence.
• A foreign licence or IDP never authorises transport services or driving for profit in Ecuador, however long the visitor period still has to run.
• Road-crash rates are among the highest in Latin America. Avoid night driving, slow down in rain and fog, expect erratic driving and sudden stops, and check for closures after landslides, heavy rain, earthquakes or volcanic activity.
• Some cities restrict vehicles carrying Ecuadorean plates on certain days or at peak hours according to the last digits of the plate (pico y placa). Hire cars carry Ecuadorean plates, so the restriction applies to visitors; check the local rule before entering the zone.
• Hire companies commonly require a minimum age of 18, at least six months of driving experience and an IDP, and UK advice notes that holders of older paper licences may need an IDP as well.
