Driving in Tuvalu: key facts

Do you need an International Driving Permit in Tuvalu?

No IDP is required by Tuvaluan law and none is formally recognised. Section 19 of the Traffic Act (CAP. 50.10) deems a visitor duly licensed if the Chief of Police is satisfied he holds 'a licence valid in any country authorising him then to drive such a motor vehicle' - the Act contains no reference at all to international driving permits or to any road-traffic convention. Tuvalu is a party to neither the 1949 Geneva nor the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (UN Treaty Collection status checked 29 July 2026), so no IDP edition has treaty force here. An IDP therefore has no legal standing here, but it remains a useful practical aid for satisfying the Chief of Police - especially for a licence not in English or in a non-Latin script.

How long can you drive in Tuvalu with a foreign licence?

2 weeks. Section 19 deems a visitor duly licensed only where he drives 'within 2 weeks of his arrival in Tuvalu'. The clock runs from the date of arrival, not from the date of any permit or visa, and the entitlement is conditional on the Chief of Police being satisfied the foreign licence is valid for that class of vehicle. Is Tuvalu a party to the 1949 or 1968 Road Traffic Convention?

Tuvalu is party to neither the 1949 Geneva Convention nor the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. An official convention IDP cannot be issued in Tuvalu, and convention rules do not bind it — licence acceptance is governed purely by local law and bilateral arrangements.

Why acceptance of your licence varies from place to place

Whether a foreign country accepts your driving licence hangs on a tangle of variables: three different road-traffic conventions signed decades apart (1926, 1949, 1968) — the oldest predates the United Nations itself, and only the latter two were concluded under it — countries at different stages of joining each (signed vs. accepted vs. ratified), licences printed in alphabets local police can't read, vehicle-category systems that don't line up between countries, document generations that may not meet a convention's format even when the country is a member, bilateral deals between individual states, and local laws that are looser in one place and stricter in the next. The same licence can be fine at one border and rejected at the next — even at the next rental desk. The International Driving Permit exists to cut through most of it: a standardized, multilingual presentation of your existing licence, with harmonized category symbols, that most officials can read at a glance. It doesn't replace your national licence or grant new rights — you carry both — and it doesn't guarantee acceptance: a handful of destinations still require a local permit alongside or instead of it, but for most it meaningfully improves your odds.

Can you drive in Tuvalu with your country's licence?

Tuvalu's Traffic Act (CAP. 50.10) accepts a driving licence valid in any country - but only for visitors, only for driving within 2 weeks of arrival, and only if the Chief of Police is satisfied the licence covers that vehicle. No IDP is legally required or formally recognised: Tuvalu is party to neither road-traffic convention. After 2 weeks, or for anyone who is not a visitor, a Tuvalu licence is required. Where to get an International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit must be obtained before you travel, and only certain countries may issue one to you — you cannot buy an official IDP from an unrelated country. Under the 1968 Vienna Convention it may be issued only by the Contracting Party where you normally reside and which issued or recognizes your licence — by that Party's competent authority or by an association it has duly empowered. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention it is issued by the competent authority of a Contracting State, or by an association that authority has duly empowered. Which body that is varies by country: a government agency in some, an authorized motoring club in others.

• Travelling from another country? Ask that country's driving-licence authority which body it authorizes to issue IDPs — a government agency in some countries, an authorized motoring club in others.

Separately, IDA offers a digital International Driver's Document — a translation of your national licence that you carry alongside it. It is not an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 or 1968 conventions by the body your country authorizes for that purpose, and it is not a certified, sworn or otherwise official translation: no authority certifies it, and where a country requires an official or certified translation by law, our document does not satisfy that requirement. It is a private translation meant to make your national licence readable at rental desks and roadside checks.

Moving to Tuvalu? Rules for new residents

Two different clocks. Section 19 is available only to 'a visitor to Tuvalu' - someone who is not a visitor (a resident, or a person relocating) never gets the 2-week deeming at all and needs a Tuvalu licence from the outset. A visitor who stays beyond 2 weeks from arrival must hold a Tuvalu licence before driving again. Official source.

Driving rules in Tuvalu tourists get fined for

• Mandatory equipment: Carry the original driving licence: section 17(2) requires a driver to produce it to a uniformed police officer on demand (with a 48-hour grace period to produce it at a nominated police station). Also carry your passport and the owner's or rental company's authority - taking a vehicle without the owner's consent is an offence under section 22. The vehicle must be currently licensed (s. 6). Note the Traffic Act contains no compulsory-insurance, helmet, seat-belt or child-restraint provision; confirm insurance cover directly with the rental operator, and treat helmet and belt use as best practice unless local regulations say otherwise.
• Drink-driving: 0.08%. Section 23(1A), inserted by Act 6 of 2006, provides that efficiency as a driver is impaired 'if the concentration of alcohol in the person's blood exceeds 0.08%'. The section 23(1) offence is broader than the number: it also catches anyone whose driving efficiency is in fact impaired by drink or a drug, and it applies to being in charge of a vehicle, not only to driving. A fine of $200 and imprisonment for 1 year (Traffic Act s. 23(1); Tuvalu uses the Australian dollar). A police officer may arrest without warrant. Statutory presumptions apply where the driver consumed alcohol within 2 hours before an offence or accident.
• Speed limits: The Traffic Act itself sets no numeric speed limit - section 30(e) only empowers the Minister to prescribe limits by regulation, and those regulations were not retrievable online. Drive on the left, obey posted signs, and reduce speed for pedestrians, motorcycles, narrow shoulders, standing water and damaged surfaces.
• Carry the original licence and, if in doubt, have Tuvalu Police confirm acceptance for your vehicle class on arrival: section 19 makes the Chief of Police's satisfaction an express condition of the entitlement, so acceptance is discretionary rather than automatic.
• UK visitors: the FCDO states 'You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in Tuvalu for up to 2 weeks', and that paper-licence holders may need to update to a photocard or get the correct version of the IDP. This is UK-specific consular guidance restating the section 19 rule, not a Tuvalu-law distinction in favour of the UK.
• Tuvalu drives on the left. Note this is not in the Traffic Act itself - the keep-left rule and any speed limits, helmet and seat-belt rules sit in regulations made under section 30, which were not available online at the time of verification.
• Roads are narrow and busy, particularly the single main road on Funafuti, and are shared with motorcycles, pedestrians and children. Keep speeds low and take extra care at night.
• The tropical cyclone season normally runs November to May but cyclones can happen year-round, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, flooding and road closures. Monitor the Tuvalu Meteorological Service and Tuvalu Media Department Radio on 621 AM.
