Where to get an International Driving Permit in Gambia?

Obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Gambia is straightforward if you hold a valid Gambia national driver's license. For those planning a visit to Gambia, it is advisable to contact the relevant authority in your home country to secure an IDP before departure. However, if you are already traveling and do not possess the IDP, you may opt to have your national driver's license translated online. This method offers a quicker, more convenient, and efficient way to ensure you can legally drive during your travels.

The International Driving Permit is a translation of the national driving license into many languages. The first ID cards appeared in 1926, after the Paris International Convention relative to Motor Traffic. The International Driving Permit was also influenced by two other conventions in 1949 and 1968. The International Driving Permit is the same as the International Driving License.

We remind you that the IDP works only with a valid national license.

How to get an International Driving Permit in Gambia?

According to the Vienna Convention of 1968, International Driving Permits (IDPs) are authorized to be issued by national governments or designated organizations. In most countries, this function is carried out by automobile associations affiliated with the AIT/FIA, the police, or other authorized entities. To obtain an International Driving Permit in Gambia, you must possess a local license and apply to the relevant authorities here (please notify us if the link is not working). The cost and processing time for an IDP vary by country.

If you hold a national license not issued in Gambia, you must verify if your license permits you to drive and if you require an IDP. If an IDP is necessary, the only option is to order a translation of your driver's license, available either via delivery or as an electronic version (confirm with the rental car company if an electronic version is acceptable), for example, through our services.

For U.S. citizens with only a U.S. driver's license, you can obtain an IDP from AAA, but it must be done before traveling to Gambia!

Driving in Gambia: key facts

QuestionAnswer
Side of the roadRight
International Driving Permit (IDP)Not required for 1 of the 240 origin licences, 239 of which have no established rule — see the row for your country of issue, in the table below
UN Road Traffic ConventionsParty to neither convention
Time limit for visitorsUp to 3 months on a UK photocard driving licence.
Minimum age18 to drive (unverified) — No accessible Gambian licensing statute; 18 stated as the regional norm only
Alcohol limitTreat the limit as zero.
Speed limitsSpeed limits are posted in km/h. No official national limit table could be located. Reduce speed well below any posted figure for potholes, checkpoints, pedestrians, livestock, flooding and unlit traffic.
Emergency numberThere is no equivalent to the UK's 999 emergency number in The Gambia. Individual police stations and fire stations have their own numbers, often mobile numbers, as many do not have a landline. There are no publications listing these numbers, so ask in person at local stations for emergency contact details, and collect clinic and insurer contacts before travelling.

Do you need an International Driving Permit in Gambia?

No IDP is legally required and none is legally recognised: the UN depositary status list for the 1949 Geneva Convention (103 parties) shows Gambia only as a 1959 UK colonial territorial extension, never as a party in its own right, and the 1968 Vienna list (91 parties) does not show Gambia at all. The current FCDO guidance (updated 7 July 2026) sets out a licence route for The Gambia and does not mention an International Driving Permit anywhere. In practice an IDP is still useful as a standardised English rendering of a non-English licence at checkpoints and rental desks, but it carries no legal authority of its own here and does not substitute for the national licence.

  • Tourists and short-term visitors: carry your national licence together with the document named in the row for your country of issue, in the table below — for most non-exempt licences that is an IDP.
  • Car renters: Carry the original licence (not a copy), passport or accepted copy, vehicle registration, rental contract and insurance. Checkpoints ask for documents routinely.

No specific penalty for driving without the required document was verified from an authoritative source.

What side of the road does Gambia drive on?

Gambia drives on the right-hand side of the road, and overtaking is done on the left. Former British colony but switched to right-hand traffic in 1965 to match neighboring Senegal.

How long can you drive in Gambia with a foreign licence?

Up to 3 months on a UK photocard driving licence. This period is documented only for UK licences; no source states a period for any other issuing state. (UK FCDO The Gambia travel advice, updated 7 July 2026 — verbatim: "You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in The Gambia for up to 3 months.")

Planning to move to Gambia? Different rules apply once you become a resident — see the residents section below.

Is Gambia a party to the 1949 or 1968 Road Traffic Convention?

Gambia is party to neither the 1949 Geneva Convention nor the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. An official convention IDP cannot be issued in Gambia, and convention rules do not bind it — licence acceptance is governed purely by local law and bilateral arrangements.

Why acceptance of your licence varies from place to place

Whether a foreign country accepts your driving licence hangs on a tangle of variables: three different road-traffic conventions signed decades apart (1926, 1949, 1968) — the oldest predates the United Nations itself, and only the latter two were concluded under it — countries at different stages of joining each (signed vs. accepted vs. ratified), licences printed in alphabets local police can't read, vehicle-category systems that don't line up between countries, document generations that may not meet a convention's format even when the country is a member, bilateral deals between individual states, and local laws that are looser in one place and stricter in the next. The same licence can be fine at one border and rejected at the next — even at the next rental desk. The International Driving Permit exists to cut through most of it: a standardized, multilingual presentation of your existing licence, with harmonized category symbols, that most officials can read at a glance. It doesn't replace your national licence or grant new rights — you carry both — and it doesn't guarantee acceptance: a handful of destinations still require a local permit alongside or instead of it, but for most it meaningfully improves your odds.

Can you drive in Gambia with your country's licence?

This table is for tourists and temporary visitors. Moving to Gambia as a resident? Different rules apply — see the residents section below. Find your licence's country of issue below. The Gambia sits outside both road-traffic conventions, so no International Driving Permit carries legal weight there and none is required. The only recognition rule confirmed by a current authoritative source is the UK one: a UK photocard licence may be used for up to 3 months, after which a Gambian licence is needed and that route requires proof of residency. Drivers from other countries should carry the original licence with an English translation if it is not in English, confirm acceptance locally, and plan around severely potholed roads, hazardous night driving, routine security checkpoints and the absence of any national emergency number. Rules change — confirm with official sources before you travel. Last verified: July 2026.

Legend: "1949" — Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (IDP valid up to 1 year); "1968" — Vienna Convention (IDP valid up to 3 years).

What the Status column means on this page:

  • National licence OK — the destination lets a visitor drive on the national licence itself. The row for your country of issue, in the table below, gives the basis, and any period or condition that qualifies it.
  • No convention basis established for your licence — IDP advised — no road-traffic convention basis for your licence could be established at this destination, so this row settles neither that the licence alone is enough nor that anything must be carried with it; carrying an IDP is advised as a practical translation of your licence rather than as a legal entitlement. The row for your country of issue, in the table below, says what could not be established.
  • Not established — the record does not settle whether you may drive here on this licence; confirm with the destination's licensing authority before you rely on it. The row for your country of issue, in the table below, says what could not be confirmed.

Turks and Caicos IslandsNot establishedWe cannot confirm a convention basis for a Turks and Caicos Islands licence — confirm with Gambia's licensing authority before you travelThe depositary record does not settle whether a road-traffic convention covers Turks and Caicos Islands: the state responsible for its international relations enumerated its 1949 territorial extensions one by one without naming Turks and Caicos Islands, but separately told the depositary that the 1949 Convention continues in force for its Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories. No convention basis for the licence can be established either way — check with the authorities before you travel [2]

Where to get an International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit must be obtained before you travel, and only certain countries may issue one to you — you cannot buy an official IDP from an unrelated country. Under the 1968 Vienna Convention it may be issued only by the Contracting Party where you normally reside and which issued or recognizes your licence — by that Party's competent authority or by an association it has duly empowered. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention it is issued by the competent authority of a Contracting State, or by an association that authority has duly empowered. Which body that is varies by country: a government agency in some, an authorized motoring club in others.

  • Travelling from Gambia? Gambia's IDPs are issued by Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). Official site. Gambia is party to neither road-traffic convention, so the permit is issued outside the UN convention framework and is not an official convention IDP — check that your destination accepts it.
  • Travelling from another country? Ask that country's driving-licence authority which body it authorizes to issue IDPs — a government agency in some countries, an authorized motoring club in others.

Separately, IDA offers a digital International Driver's Document — a translation of your national licence that you carry alongside it. It is not an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 or 1968 conventions by the body your country authorizes for that purpose, and it is not a certified, sworn or otherwise official translation: no authority certifies it, and where a country requires an official or certified translation by law, our document does not satisfy that requirement. It is a private translation meant to make your national licence readable at rental desks and roadside checks.

Moving to Gambia? Rules for new residents

A Gambian licence is the route for staying longer than 3 months — but it is gated on residency, not merely on elapsed time. Foreign-government travel advice.

Driving rules in Gambia tourists get fined for

  • Mandatory equipment: No official Gambian equipment list could be located. As general practice, confirm tyres and a usable spare, brakes, lights, seatbelts, warning triangle, first-aid kit, registration and insurance before setting off.
  • Drink-driving: Treat the limit as zero. No official current Gambian BAC figure could be located from any reachable source, and the WHO road-safety country profile for The Gambia was not retrievable. No published penalty schedule for impaired driving could be located. Arrest and prosecution are possible; insurance consequences are a general expectation, not a sourced Gambian rule.
  • Speed limits: Speed limits are posted in km/h. No official national limit table could be located. Reduce speed well below any posted figure for potholes, checkpoints, pedestrians, livestock, flooding and unlit traffic.
  • Drive on the right. The Gambia is a former British colony but switched to right-hand traffic in 1965 to match neighbouring Senegal.
  • "Driving standards are poor, roads are severely potholed and after dark there is poor road and vehicle lighting." Avoid driving at night.
  • "Security checkpoints operate in and around the capital Banjul and are common on all major routes." Take care when approaching them and expect your vehicle to be searched if you are stopped by security forces.
  • Heavy rainfall from June to October can cause localised flooding, which affects rural roads in particular.
  • Carry the original licence (not a copy), passport or accepted copy, vehicle registration, rental contract and insurance. Checkpoints ask for documents routinely.
