Do you need an International Driving Permit in Botswana?

An IDP is not legally required. Road Traffic Regulations reg. 11A(1)(b) deems 'a national driving licence issued in a country other than Botswana' a valid driving licence for 365 days from first arrival, subject to the language and photo provisos. Separately, reg. 11A(1)(a) deems valid 'a conventional driving permit or an international driving permit held by a person resident outside Botswana'. Botswana's own reg. 2 defines 'conventional driving permit' by reference to the 1968 Vienna Convention, while Botswana is itself a 1949 Geneva party (accession 3 Jan 1967) — so both 1949 and 1968 booklets are accepted. Because the conventions themselves make an IDP valid only alongside the underlying national licence, and because rental firms demand both, carry the national licence and the IDP.

• Tourists and short-term visitors: carry your national licence together with the document named in the row for your country of issue, in the table below — for most origin licences that document is not an IDP, so read your own answer rather than assuming one.
• Car renters: Section 30(3) requires the driver to always carry the driving licence while driving and to produce it on demand to a police officer. Carry the original licence, the IDP if held, passport, rental agreement, registration and insurance evidence. Police roadblocks are routine on inter-city routes.

How long can you drive in Botswana with a foreign licence?

A visitor may drive on a valid foreign national licence for 365 days from the day the holder first arrives in Botswana, provided the licence is in English (or has an attached certified translation or competent-authority authenticity letter) and bears a photograph and signature. Why acceptance of your licence varies from place to place

Whether a foreign country accepts your driving licence hangs on a tangle of variables: three different road-traffic conventions signed decades apart (1926, 1949, 1968) — the oldest predates the United Nations itself, and only the latter two were concluded under it — countries at different stages of joining each (signed vs. accepted vs. ratified), licences printed in alphabets local police can't read, vehicle-category systems that don't line up between countries, document generations that may not meet a convention's format even when the country is a member, bilateral deals between individual states, and local laws that are looser in one place and stricter in the next. The same licence can be fine at one border and rejected at the next — even at the next rental desk. The International Driving Permit exists to cut through most of it: a standardized, multilingual presentation of your existing licence, with harmonized category symbols, that most officials can read at a glance. It doesn't replace your national licence or grant new rights — you carry both — and it doesn't guarantee acceptance: a handful of destinations still require a local permit alongside or instead of it, but for most it meaningfully improves your odds.

The catch is the document, not the country: the licence must be in English — or carry an attached certified translation or an authenticity letter — and must show a photograph and signature. Botswana is a 1949 Geneva party but its regulations also expressly recognise 1968 Vienna permits, so either IDP booklet works and is the cleanest way to satisfy the language rule. Where to get an International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit must be obtained before you travel, and only certain countries may issue one to you — you cannot buy an official IDP from an unrelated country. Under the 1968 Vienna Convention it may be issued only by the Contracting Party where you normally reside and which issued or recognizes your licence — by that Party's competent authority or by an association it has duly empowered. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention it is issued by the competent authority of a Contracting State, or by an association that authority has duly empowered. Which body that is varies by country: a government agency in some, an authorized motoring club in others.

• Travelling from Botswana? Botswana's official IDPs are issued by Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS). Official site.
• Travelling from another country? Ask that country's driving-licence authority which body it authorizes to issue IDPs — a government agency in some countries, an authorized motoring club in others.

Separately, IDA offers a digital International Driver's Document — a translation of your national licence that you carry alongside it. It is not an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 or 1968 conventions by the body your country authorizes for that purpose, and it is not a certified, sworn or otherwise official translation: no authority certifies it, and where a country requires an official or certified translation by law, our document does not satisfy that requirement. It is a private translation meant to make your national licence readable at rental desks and roadside checks.

Moving to Botswana? Rules for new residents

Two distinct clocks. Reg. 11A(2): once the holder takes up residence, the foreign licence stops being deemed valid 365 days after the date residence was taken up. Reg. 11B(1): a holder who takes up residence for a continuous period of 365 days or more must convert to a Botswana licence. Reg. 11B(3): a holder of a licence issued in a SADC country is not required to convert while staying in Botswana, but before its expiry may either convert or renew it in the issuing country. Driving rules in Botswana tourists get fined for

• Mandatory equipment: Seat belts and motorcycle helmets are required as applicable. For remote travel carry ample water, spare tyres, a jack, warning triangles and reliable communications; mobile coverage is patchy in the Kalahari and delta regions.
• Drink-driving: Section 46(1) of the Road Traffic Act prohibits driving when breath or blood alcohol is 'in excess of the prescribed limit' — the numeric limit is fixed by subsidiary legislation and was not verified against a current official tariff, so no figure is asserted here. Treat zero alcohol as the safe rule; breath testing is used. Section 46(3): exceeding the prescribed limit carries 'a fine of not less than P3 000 but not more than P5 000 or to imprisonment for a term not less than 18 months but not more than two years, or to both'. Section 46(4): driving while unfit through drink or drugs carries 'a fine of not less than P5 000 but not more than P10 000 or to imprisonment for a term of not less than two years but not more than five years, or to both'.
• Speed limits: Follow posted km/h limits; the Act penalises speeding under s. 45 and allows speed-measuring-device certificates as evidence without further proof. Slow sharply for settlements, animals and road damage; distances between fuel and services can be very large.
• Section 30(3) requires the driver to always carry the driving licence while driving and to produce it on demand to a police officer. Carry the original licence, the IDP if held, passport, rental agreement, registration and insurance evidence. Police roadblocks are routine on inter-city routes.
• Obtain written permission from the rental company before taking a vehicle across a border or into game reserves and concessions, and verify insurance and recovery cover; many contracts exclude unsealed park tracks and 4x4-only routes.
• Traffic keeps left. Wildlife, free-roaming livestock, pedestrians, very long distances between services, potholes and unlit vehicles make night driving on rural roads particularly dangerous.
