Where to get an International Driving Permit in Australia?

Obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Australia is straightforward if you hold a valid Australia national driver's license. For those planning a visit to Australia, it is advisable to contact the relevant authority in your home country to secure an IDP before departure. However, if you are already traveling and do not possess the IDP, you may opt to have your national driver's license translated online. This method offers a quicker, more convenient, and efficient way to ensure you can legally drive during your travels.

The International Driving Permit is a translation of the national driving license into many languages. The first ID cards appeared in 1926, after the Paris International Convention relative to Motor Traffic. The International Driving Permit was also influenced by two other conventions in 1949 and 1968. The International Driving Permit is the same as the International Driving License.

We remind you that the IDP works only with a valid national license.

How to get an International Driving Permit in Australia?

According to the Vienna Convention of 1968, International Driving Permits (IDPs) are authorized to be issued by national governments or designated organizations. In most countries, this function is carried out by automobile associations affiliated with the AIT/FIA, the police, or other authorized entities. To obtain an International Driving Permit in Australia, you must possess a local license and apply to the relevant authorities here (please notify us if the link is not working). The cost and processing time for an IDP vary by country.

If you hold a national license not issued in Australia, you must verify if your license permits you to drive and if you require an IDP. If an IDP is necessary, the only option is to order a translation of your driver's license, available either via delivery or as an electronic version (confirm with the rental car company if an electronic version is acceptable), for example, through our services.

For U.S. citizens with only a U.S. driver's license, you can obtain an IDP from AAA, but it must be done before traveling to Australia!

Do you need an International Driving Permit in Australia?

Australia is a 1949 Convention destination (not a 1968 party), but visitor document rules are state/territory law. Across the eight official visitor sources reviewed, a valid English-language overseas licence is normally sufficient. If it is not in English, an IDP or an official/approved English translation is the recurring alternative; the IDP must be carried with the original licence, and SA guidance adds that the IDP must be issued by the same country that issued the licence. Thus an IDP is not a blanket requirement, although it is the cleanest portable option for a non-English licence.

  • Tourists and short-term visitors: carry your national licence together with the document named in the row for your country of issue, in the table below β€” for most origin licences that document is not an IDP, so read your own answer rather than assuming one.
  • Car renters: Rental companies can impose higher minimum ages, licence-tenure requirements and document rules than traffic law.

No specific penalty for driving without the required document was verified from an authoritative source. Official source.

What side of the road does Australia drive on?

Australia drives on the left-hand side of the road, and overtaking is done on the right. Cars in Australia are right-hand drive.

How long can you drive in Australia with a foreign licence?

State/territory variance: NSW temporary visitors up to 6 months (since 1 July 2023 those staying longer must get a NSW temporary visitor licence); Victoria less than 6 months from starting to live there and leaving/re-entering does not reset the clock; Queensland and Western Australia have no fixed visitor cap while genuine visitor status and the licence remain valid; South Australia allows visitors while visiting subject to home-licence conditions; Tasmania allows visitors and temporary-visa holders for the visa/stay; Northern Territory allows 3 months; ACT allows a genuine visitor while visitor status continues. (Eight state/territory licensing authorities; NSW visitor page used as the lead source)

Planning to move to Australia? Different rules apply once you become a resident β€” see the residents section below.

Is Australia a party to the 1949 or 1968 Road Traffic Convention?

Australia is a Contracting Party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, but not to the 1968 Vienna Convention.

  • 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic: accession on 7 Dec 1954.

Why acceptance of your licence varies from place to place

Whether a foreign country accepts your driving licence hangs on a tangle of variables: three different road-traffic conventions signed decades apart (1926, 1949, 1968) β€” the oldest predates the United Nations itself, and only the latter two were concluded under it β€” countries at different stages of joining each (signed vs. accepted vs. ratified), licences printed in alphabets local police can't read, vehicle-category systems that don't line up between countries, document generations that may not meet a convention's format even when the country is a member, bilateral deals between individual states, and local laws that are looser in one place and stricter in the next. The same licence can be fine at one border and rejected at the next β€” even at the next rental desk. The International Driving Permit exists to cut through most of it: a standardized, multilingual presentation of your existing licence, with harmonized category symbols, that most officials can read at a glance. It doesn't replace your national licence or grant new rights β€” you carry both β€” and it doesn't guarantee acceptance: a handful of destinations still require a local permit alongside or instead of it, but for most it meaningfully improves your odds.

The rule in each state or territory

Australia has no national visitor rule: each state and territory licenses drivers and sets its own clock. Four run no clock at all for a genuine visitor, the Northern Territory gives three months, New South Wales and Victoria give six, and Tasmania attaches it to a visa rather than to arrival.

New South WalesYes6 months from arrival for a temporary overseas visitor; 3 months for an Australian citizen living overseasAn English translation or an IDP, if the licence is not in English

VictoriaYesUnder 6 months, counted from the day you begin living in Victoria β€” presence, not entryA NAATI or consulate translation if the licence is not in English; the IDP is not named

Can you drive in Australia with your country's licence?

This table is for tourists and temporary visitors. Moving to Australia as a resident? Different rules apply β€” see the residents section below. Find your licence's country of issue below. Australia accepts a valid overseas licence under state/territory rules regardless of convention membership. A licence already in English usually needs no IDP; a non-English licence generally needs the original plus a 1949 IDP or approved English translation. Visitor periods vary sharply, from 3 months in NT to no fixed cap for genuine visitors in ACT, Queensland and Western Australia. Rules change β€” confirm with official sources before you travel. • IDP or translation β€” your national licence needs a supporting document alongside it. Which ones the destination accepts, and whether an official IDP can be issued for your licence at all, are in the row for your country of issue, in the table below.
  • Not established β€” the record does not settle whether you may drive here on this licence; confirm with the destination's licensing authority before you rely on it. The row for your country of issue, in the table below, says what could not be confirmed.
  • National licence OK β€” IDD/translation advised β€” the destination does not require an IDP for this licence, and no official convention IDP can be issued for it; carry an IDD or a certified translation instead. Where to get an International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit must be obtained before you travel, and only certain countries may issue one to you β€” you cannot buy an official IDP from an unrelated country. Under the 1968 Vienna Convention it may be issued only by the Contracting Party where you normally reside and which issued or recognizes your licence β€” by that Party's competent authority or by an association it has duly empowered. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention it is issued by the competent authority of a Contracting State, or by an association that authority has duly empowered. Which body that is varies by country: a government agency in some, an authorized motoring club in others.

  • Travelling from Australia? Australia's official IDPs are issued by Australian Automobile Association (AAA) β€” applications are accepted online. Official site.
  • Travelling from another country? Ask that country's driving-licence authority which body it authorizes to issue IDPs β€” a government agency in some countries, an authorized motoring club in others.

Separately, IDA offers a digital International Driver's Document β€” a translation of your national licence that you carry alongside it. It is not an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 or 1968 conventions by the body your country authorizes for that purpose, and it is not a certified, sworn or otherwise official translation: no authority certifies it, and where a country requires an official or certified translation by law, our document does not satisfy that requirement. It is a private translation meant to make your national licence readable at rental desks and roadside checks.

Which countries can convert a licence in Australia without an exam?

Residence clocks are separate from tourist clocks and vary: NSW generally 3 months from arrival for Australian citizens/permanent residents (and 6 months for temporary visitors intending to stay, via the temporary visitor licence); Victoria 6 months from beginning to live there; Queensland 3 months (from moving, or from resident-visa grant); Western Australia 3 months; South Australia 90 days after becoming a permanent resident; Tasmania 6 months after permanent-visa grant; Northern Territory 3 months; ACT requires an ACT licence within 6 months of taking up residency. Conversion without tests depends on the current nationally coordinated recognised-country policy and vehicle class.

Residents-only: this list governs licence conversion after taking up residence, not visitor driving rights. The current ordinary-car list contains 28 jurisdictions including New Zealand; Queensland's page (last updated 29 May 2026, recounted 2026-07-28) lists 27 recognised countries and handles New Zealand separately with more lenient rules. Some entries are date-limited (Isle of Man licences issued on/after 1 Apr 1991; Malta on/after 2 Jan 2004). Heavy-vehicle conversions may still require tests. The age-limited Experienced Driver Recognition category has ended nationwide: ACT/NT/SA/VIC in April 2025, WA 31 Oct 2025, Tasmania 1 Nov 2025, Queensland 29 Nov 2025 and NSW 1 Feb 2026 β€” do not use older EDR whitelists (former List B countries such as South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Africa and most newer EU members now require tests). Driving rules in Australia tourists get fined for

  • Mandatory equipment: No universal national triangle/vest/extinguisher carry rule for ordinary private cars was established. Seat belts and child restraints are compulsory. Seasonal equipment is local: winter tyres or chains are required on signed routes/conditions in alpine areas.
  • Drink-driving: 0.05 g/100 ml is the general full-licence limit in states such as NSW and Queensland; zero applies to learners/provisional drivers, and lower/zero limits apply to various professional and heavy-vehicle categories. State law controls. State/territory offence bands, immediate suspensions and interlock rules vary; no single national fine. Check the jurisdiction being driven.
  • Speed limits: Posted state/territory limits control. A common default is 50 km/h in built-up areas; major roads are commonly 80-110 km/h, and signed NT roads can be higher (up to 130 km/h). NSW's unsigned defaults are 50 built-up and 100 elsewhere; verify every sign.
  • Drive on the left. Seat belts and compliant child restraints are compulsory; motorcycle and bicycle helmet rules are enforced.
  • Rental companies can impose higher minimum ages, licence-tenure requirements and document rules than traffic law.
  • An overseas licence remains subject to its home restrictions and the local vehicle class; an automatic-only or provisional entitlement does not become unrestricted in Australia.
