Driving in Suriname: key facts

Do you need an International Driving Permit in Suriname?

An IDP is not legally required for a short visit. Korps Politie Suriname states that a holidaymaker or business visitor who can show a stay of no more than two weeks may drive on the valid foreign national licence alone. The IDP becomes the practical route from day 15 onward: the police list the two combinations that work — the valid foreign national licence together with a valid international driving permit ('het geldig buitenlands nationaal rijbewijs en het geldig internationaal rijbewijs'), or together with a local driving-authorisation document ('het geldig buitenlands nationaal rijbewijs en het ... rij toestemmingsbewijs'). Edition: Suriname is not a contracting party to either the 1949 Geneva or the 1968 Vienna Convention (the UN depositary records it only as a territory to which the Netherlands extended the 1949 Convention on 9 January 1955; no succession was filed after independence), so no treaty obliges it to accept any edition. The Surinamese notices say 'internationaal rijbewijs' generically without naming a model. The only source that names an edition is ANWB ('IRB model 1949 wordt geaccepteerd'), and Suriname's own outbound IDP is capped at one year's validity — the 1949 signature. Take a 1949 IDP. A 1968 booklet is not expressly excluded but is unconfirmed.

What side of the road does Suriname drive on?

Suriname drives on the left-hand side of the road, and overtaking is done on the right. One of only two mainland South American countries driving on the left (with Guyana).

How long can you drive in Suriname with a foreign licence?

14 days from arrival on the foreign national licence alone. Korps Politie Suriname: 'Indien een vakantieganger of een persoon voor zakelijke doeleinden in Suriname is en die kan aantonen dat hij/zij niet langer dan twee weken in het land zal verblijven, mag die met zijn/haar geldig buitenlands nationaal rijbewijs in Suriname rijden.' The Corps notice puts it as 'het geldig buitenlands nationaal rijbewijs en het geldig paspoort, gedurende de periode van 14 (veertien) dagen na aankomst in Suriname' — so carry the passport as well. From day 15 you need the national licence plus either a valid international driving permit or a rij-toestemmingsbewijs issued by or on behalf of the Procureur-Generaal at the Hof van Justitie, obtained from the Rijbewijzen department at the Nieuwe Haven police station in Paramaribo. The Netherlands' official travel advice confirms the same clock: 'Uw Nederlandse rijbewijs is geldig in Suriname voor een periode van maximaal 14 dagen na aankomst.' Is Suriname a party to the 1949 or 1968 Road Traffic Convention?

Suriname is party to neither the 1949 Geneva Convention nor the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. An official convention IDP cannot be issued in Suriname, and convention rules do not bind it — licence acceptance is governed purely by local law and bilateral arrangements.

Why acceptance of your licence varies from place to place

Whether a foreign country accepts your driving licence hangs on a tangle of variables: three different road-traffic conventions signed decades apart (1926, 1949, 1968) — the oldest predates the United Nations itself, and only the latter two were concluded under it — countries at different stages of joining each (signed vs. accepted vs. ratified), licences printed in alphabets local police can't read, vehicle-category systems that don't line up between countries, document generations that may not meet a convention's format even when the country is a member, bilateral deals between individual states, and local laws that are looser in one place and stricter in the next. The same licence can be fine at one border and rejected at the next — even at the next rental desk. The International Driving Permit exists to cut through most of it: a standardized, multilingual presentation of your existing licence, with harmonized category symbols, that most officials can read at a glance. It doesn't replace your national licence or grant new rights — you carry both — and it doesn't guarantee acceptance: a handful of destinations still require a local permit alongside or instead of it, but for most it meaningfully improves your odds.

Can you drive in Suriname with your country's licence?

This table is for tourists and temporary visitors. Moving to Suriname as a resident? Different rules apply — see the residents section below. Find your licence's country of issue below. Suriname recognises any valid foreign national driving licence for 14 days from arrival — no treaty membership, no approved list, no reciprocity test. Korps Politie Suriname states plainly that a holidaymaker or business visitor who can show a stay of no more than two weeks may drive on their own licence. From day 15 you need the national licence plus either an International Driving Permit or a rij-toestemmingsbewijs from the police. Two things catch people out: traffic drives on the left (Suriname and Guyana are the last two left-hand-traffic countries in South America), and Suriname is a party to neither road-traffic convention, so IDP acceptance rests on domestic practice — take the 1949 edition. Where to get an International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit must be obtained before you travel, and only certain countries may issue one to you — you cannot buy an official IDP from an unrelated country. Under the 1968 Vienna Convention it may be issued only by the Contracting Party where you normally reside and which issued or recognizes your licence — by that Party's competent authority or by an association it has duly empowered. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention it is issued by the competent authority of a Contracting State, or by an association that authority has duly empowered. Which body that is varies by country: a government agency in some, an authorized motoring club in others.

• Travelling from Suriname? Suriname's IDPs are issued by Korps Politie Suriname (Afdeling Rijbewijzen). Official site. Suriname is party to neither road-traffic convention, so the permit is issued outside the UN convention framework and is not an official convention IDP — check that your destination accepts it.
• Travelling from another country? Ask that country's driving-licence authority which body it authorizes to issue IDPs — a government agency in some countries, an authorized motoring club in others.

Separately, IDA offers a digital International Driver's Document — a translation of your national licence that you carry alongside it. It is not an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 or 1968 conventions by the body your country authorizes for that purpose, and it is not a certified, sworn or otherwise official translation: no authority certifies it, and where a country requires an official or certified translation by law, our document does not satisfy that requirement. It is a private translation meant to make your national licence readable at rental desks and roadside checks.

Moving to Suriname? Rules for new residents

Two clocks, do not confuse them. The 14-day clock is a genuine visitor clock tied to arrival. The resident route is the rij-toestemming: granted for the duration of your legal residence at the time of application but never more than 1 year, and renewable. Once you hold a rij-toestemming for three uninterrupted years you may convert to a Surinamese licence. Official source.

Driving rules in Suriname tourists get fined for

• Mandatory equipment: Wear seat belts and use appropriate child restraints. Carry the original licence, the IDP or rij-toestemming if your stay exceeds 14 days, passport, vehicle registration, and rental and insurance papers — driving an uninsured vehicle carries its own fine (SRD 5,000 for a car under the 2022 tariff).
• Drink-driving: No current authoritative blood-alcohol threshold for Suriname could be verified on an official source. Treat the safe limit as zero and do not drink and drive. Drink-driving exposes you to arrest, prosecution and seizure of the licence — the Suriname police routinely report 'rijbewijs ingevorderd' (licence confiscated) after serious incidents. The specific alcohol tariff was not verified; the general Rijwet 1971 ceiling after the 2022 amendment is 2 years' imprisonment and/or SRD 25,000.
• Speed limits: Drive on the left and obey posted km/h limits. Specific national default limits (urban / rural / highway) could not be verified on an official Surinamese source, so follow the signs. Cut speed sharply after dark, on unlit stretches, on unsealed interior roads and in flooded areas.
• Traffic drives on the left. Suriname and Guyana are the only two remaining left-hand-traffic countries in South America — a genuine trap for visitors arriving from Brazil, French Guiana or anywhere in continental Europe.
• Carry the original licence at all times — the IDP or rij-toestemming never replaces it. The police list the valid combinations as licence+passport (first 14 days), licence+IDP, or licence+rij-toestemmingsbewijs; anyone driving outside these combinations is fined for not holding a valid licence.
• UK FCDO: 'Some drivers may have poor road sense, and there may be frequent hazards, inadequate lighting and poor road conditions in some areas.' And: 'When driving at night, take care to avoid cyclists, pedestrians and animals'.
• Hire firms are stricter than the law: they typically require proof of driving experience, a higher minimum age and an IDP even for a stay under 14 days. Settle this with the operator before booking.
• UK FCDO on local transport: 'Only use licensed taxis or those on official hotel taxi ranks. Do not hail taxis from the roadside'.
