Driving in Belize: key facts

Do you need an International Driving Permit in Belize?

Belize is a party to neither the 1949 Geneva nor the 1968 Vienna Convention (checked against the UN depositary status lists), so no IDP booklet format is formally designated. None is needed: section 45(2) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Cap. 230, exempts the holder of a valid foreign domestic driving licence from holding a Belize licence, and the Belize Police Department confirms visitors may drive on a valid foreign licence. Section 45(2) also recognises an international driving licence issued abroad under an International Convention as an alternative document, so a 1949 or 1968 IDP is accepted if you carry one - but it is never a substitute for the home licence, which must still be valid and carried.

• Tourists and short-term visitors: carry your national licence together with the document named in the row for your country of issue, in the table below — for most origin licences that document is not an IDP, so read your own answer rather than assuming one.
• Car renters: Carry the original valid foreign licence at all times. Section 40 of Cap. 230 obliges the driver to produce his driving licence to any police officer in uniform 'forthwith' on request, with a BZD 25 fine for failing to do so. Carry your passport, rental agreement, registration and insurance evidence as well.

What side of the road does Belize drive on?

Belize drives on the right-hand side of the road, and overtaking is done on the left. Cars in Belize are left-hand drive.

How long can you drive in Belize with a foreign licence?

Plan on 90 days. The Belize Police Department states verbatim: 'Visitors may drive with a valid foreign license for up to 90 days. After 90 days, you must obtain a Belize driver's license.' The statute is more generous - section 45(2) of Cap. 230 (R.E. 2020) exempts the holder of a valid foreign domestic or convention international licence from holding a Belize licence 'during a period of twelve months from the date of his last entry into Belize'. Both texts are current; the police figure is the government's own public-facing guidance and is what a roadside officer is likely to apply, so treat 90 days as the practical ceiling and seek written confirmation from the Department of Transport before relying on the statutory twelve months. Is Belize a party to the 1949 or 1968 Road Traffic Convention?

Belize is party to neither the 1949 Geneva Convention nor the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. An official convention IDP cannot be issued in Belize, and convention rules do not bind it — licence acceptance is governed purely by local law and bilateral arrangements.

Why acceptance of your licence varies from place to place

Whether a foreign country accepts your driving licence hangs on a tangle of variables: three different road-traffic conventions signed decades apart (1926, 1949, 1968) — the oldest predates the United Nations itself, and only the latter two were concluded under it — countries at different stages of joining each (signed vs. accepted vs. ratified), licences printed in alphabets local police can't read, vehicle-category systems that don't line up between countries, document generations that may not meet a convention's format even when the country is a member, bilateral deals between individual states, and local laws that are looser in one place and stricter in the next. The same licence can be fine at one border and rejected at the next — even at the next rental desk. The International Driving Permit exists to cut through most of it: a standardized, multilingual presentation of your existing licence, with harmonized category symbols, that most officials can read at a glance. It doesn't replace your national licence or grant new rights — you carry both — and it doesn't guarantee acceptance: a handful of destinations still require a local permit alongside or instead of it, but for most it meaningfully improves your odds.

Can you drive in Belize with your country's licence?

This table is for tourists and temporary visitors. Moving to Belize as a resident? Different rules apply — see the residents section below. Find your licence's country of issue below. Belize lets you drive on your own national licence. Section 45(2) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act exempts the holder of any valid foreign domestic licence from needing a Belize licence - there is no treaty gate, no approved-country list and no script or translation rule, and Belize belongs to neither road-traffic convention. The catch is the clock: the Belize Police Department publicly says 90 days, while the Act says twelve months from your last entry. Plan around 90 days. An IDP is not legally required, though rental desks often ask for one. Rules change — confirm with official sources before you travel. Last verified: July 2026.

Where to get an International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit must be obtained before you travel, and only certain countries may issue one to you — you cannot buy an official IDP from an unrelated country. Under the 1968 Vienna Convention it may be issued only by the Contracting Party where you normally reside and which issued or recognizes your licence — by that Party's competent authority or by an association it has duly empowered. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention it is issued by the competent authority of a Contracting State, or by an association that authority has duly empowered. Which body that is varies by country: a government agency in some, an authorized motoring club in others.

• Travelling from Belize? Belize's IDPs are issued by Department of Transport. Official site. Belize is party to neither road-traffic convention, so the permit is issued outside the UN convention framework and is not an official convention IDP — check that your destination accepts it.
• Travelling from another country? Ask that country's driving-licence authority which body it authorizes to issue IDPs — a government agency in some countries, an authorized motoring club in others.

Separately, IDA offers a digital International Driver's Document — a translation of your national licence that you carry alongside it. It is not an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 or 1968 conventions by the body your country authorizes for that purpose, and it is not a certified, sworn or otherwise official translation: no authority certifies it, and where a country requires an official or certified translation by law, our document does not satisfy that requirement. It is a private translation meant to make your national licence readable at rental desks and roadside checks.

Moving to Belize? Rules for new residents

The Belize Police Department directs anyone driving beyond 90 days to obtain a Belize driver's licence; section 45(2) of Cap. 230 sets the outer statutory limit at twelve months from last entry. Either way, a person settling in Belize needs a Belize Driving Licence. Official source.

Driving rules in Belize tourists get fined for

• Mandatory equipment: Cap. 230 (R.E. 2020) contains no seat-belt or helmet section - those sit in subsidiary regulations that were not retrievable online, so treat equipment rules as unverified detail rather than quoted law. Wear seat belts regardless, and before rural or unpaved travel check lights, tyres, the spare wheel, jack and warning triangle.
• Drink-driving: 0.08% - the prescribed limit in section 81(2) of Cap. 230 (R.E. 2020) is 80 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, or 107 milligrammes in 100 millilitres of urine. The Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2025, before the National Assembly, would add a breath figure of 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, expressly stated in the Bill as 'equivalent to 80 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood', so the effective threshold is unchanged either way. Treat zero as the safe number. Driving, attempting to drive or being in charge while unfit through drink or drugs (s. 74) carries on summary conviction a fine of not less than BZD 500 or one year's imprisonment or both; on a second or subsequent conviction, a fine of not less than BZD 1,000 up to BZD 5,000, or two years' imprisonment, or both. Exceeding the prescribed limit (s. 75) attracts the same penalties. A police officer may arrest without warrant. Conviction carries disqualification for twelve months, and permanent disqualification on a repeat offence.
• Speed limits: Belize posts limits in miles per hour. Cap. 230 itself sets no numeric general limit - limits come from subsidiary regulations and posted signs, which could not be retrieved from the official portal at the time of checking. Follow posted signs and slow well below them through villages, over speed humps, in rain and on unpaved roads.
• Carry the original valid foreign licence at all times. Section 40 of Cap. 230 obliges the driver to produce his driving licence to any police officer in uniform 'forthwith' on request, with a BZD 25 fine for failing to do so. Carry your passport, rental agreement, registration and insurance evidence as well.
• If your licence is not in Latin script or not in English, nothing in Belize law requires a translation - but carry an IDP or a certified English translation anyway, and get the rental company's written acceptance before you fly, because rental desks set their own document rules.
• If you are convicted of a driving offence in Belize, Schedule I to Cap. 230 provides that the court sends particulars to the Department, which records the disqualification on your foreign licence, notifies the authority that issued it, and retains the licence until you leave Belize or the disqualification expires. A Belize conviction therefore follows you home.
• Traffic keeps to the right and distances and speeds are posted in miles. Slow well below the posted limit for unmarked speed humps, villages, pedestrians, bicycles, animals, single-lane bridges and unpaved sections; avoid unnecessary night driving outside towns.
