Obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Turks and Caicos Islands is straightforward if you hold a valid Turks and Caicos Islands national driver's license. For those planning a visit to Turks and Caicos Islands, it is advisable to contact the relevant authority in your home country to secure an IDP before departure. However, if you are already traveling and do not possess the IDP, you may opt to have your national driver's license translated online. This method offers a quicker, more convenient, and efficient way to ensure you can legally drive during your travels.
The International Driving Permit is a translation of the national driving license into many languages. The first ID cards appeared in 1926, after the Paris International Convention relative to Motor Traffic. The International Driving Permit was also influenced by two other conventions in 1949 and 1968. The International Driving Permit is the same as the International Driving License.
We remind you that the IDP works only with a valid national license.

According to the Vienna Convention of 1968, International Driving Permits (IDPs) are authorized to be issued by national governments or designated organizations. In most countries, this function is carried out by automobile associations affiliated with the AIT/FIA, the police, or other authorized entities. To obtain an International Driving Permit in Turks and Caicos Islands, you must possess a local license and apply to the relevant authorities here (please notify us if the link is not working). The cost and processing time for an IDP vary by country.
If you hold a national license not issued in Turks and Caicos Islands, you must verify if your license permits you to drive and if you require an IDP. If an IDP is necessary, the only option is to order a translation of your driver's license, available either via delivery or as an electronic version (confirm with the rental car company if an electronic version is acceptable), for example, through our services.
For U.S. citizens with only a U.S. driver's license, you can obtain an IDP from AAA, but it must be done before traveling to Turks and Caicos Islands!

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Side of the road | Left |
| International Driving Permit (IDP) | No established rule was found for 240 of the 240 origin licences — check with the authorities before you travel, and see the row for your country of issue, in the table below |
| UN Road Traffic Conventions | We could not confirm membership in either convention (the 1968 Vienna Convention does not apply; the 1949 Geneva Convention is the open question) |
| Time limit for visitors | One month on a valid UK photocard licence. |
| Minimum age | 18 to drive (unverified) — No source verified |
| Alcohol limit | No blood-alcohol threshold could be verified from any authoritative source. |
| Speed limits | 20 mph in towns and 40 mph elsewhere, unless signs require otherwise. |
| Emergency number | Telephone 911 for ambulance, fire or police. |
An IDP is not required for the one verified route: UK government guidance states a UK photocard licence may be used for one month. The same guidance states that holders of an old-style UK paper licence must either upgrade it or obtain an International Driving Permit — so IDPs are accepted in the territory; the edition (1949 or 1968) could not be verified against Turks and Caicos law, and is left unstated here rather than guessed. Independent (unverified) sources describe non-Commonwealth/non-US/non-Canadian visitors needing either an IDP or a locally issued visitor's driving permit; this could not be confirmed against the Ordinance. Hire firms often impose their own IDP requirement regardless.
No specific penalty for driving without the required document was verified from an authoritative source.
Turks and Caicos Islands drives on the left-hand side of the road, and overtaking is done on the right. Drives on the left, but many vehicles are left-hand-drive imports.
One month on a valid UK photocard licence. The period applying to other nationalities is not confirmed against Turks and Caicos law. (UK government Turks and Caicos road guidance, verbatim: 'You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in the Turks and Caicos Islands for one month.')

The two United Nations Conventions on Road Traffic have different answers in Turks and Caicos Islands, and only one of them is settled. The 1968 Vienna Convention does not apply: the United Kingdom declared on ratifying it that the ratification "only applies to the Metropolitan United Kingdom and does not apply to any Crown Dependency or Overseas Territory unless the United Kingdom makes an express declaration", and the only such declaration on record names Gibraltar, Guernsey and Jersey. The 1949 Geneva Convention is genuinely disputed rather than simply unrecorded. Against it applying: between 1958 and 1965 the United Kingdom filed eighteen dated notifications extending that Convention to twenty-eight named territories, and Turks and Caicos Islands is not among them. For it applying: the same 2018 declaration adds that until an express declaration is made, the 1949 Convention "will continue in force in relations between the contracting parties to those Conventions and the Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories". This guide does not choose between those readings. Treat any International Driving Permit requirement here as unconfirmed and check with the authorities before you travel.
Whether a foreign country accepts your driving licence hangs on a tangle of variables: three different road-traffic conventions signed decades apart (1926, 1949, 1968) — the oldest predates the United Nations itself, and only the latter two were concluded under it — countries at different stages of joining each (signed vs. accepted vs. ratified), licences printed in alphabets local police can't read, vehicle-category systems that don't line up between countries, document generations that may not meet a convention's format even when the country is a member, bilateral deals between individual states, and local laws that are looser in one place and stricter in the next. The same licence can be fine at one border and rejected at the next — even at the next rental desk. The International Driving Permit exists to cut through most of it: a standardized, multilingual presentation of your existing licence, with harmonized category symbols, that most officials can read at a glance. It doesn't replace your national licence or grant new rights — you carry both — and it doesn't guarantee acceptance: a handful of destinations still require a local permit alongside or instead of it, but for most it meaningfully improves your odds.
This table is for tourists and temporary visitors. Moving to Turks and Caicos Islands as a resident? Different rules apply — see the residents section below. Find your licence's country of issue below. Turks and Caicos Islands is a British Overseas Territory outside the EU/EEA, so EU licence recognition does not apply. The one firmly verified rule is UK-specific: a UK photocard licence may be used for one month. For other origins the territory's own Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Ordinance controls, and reported practice is that visitors who are not from the UK, US, Canada or a Commonwealth country need either an International Driving Permit or a locally issued visitor's driving permit from the Road Safety Department. That local rule could not be verified against the statute, so carrying an IDP alongside your national licence is the safe course. Rules change — confirm with official sources before you travel. Last verified: July 2026.
Legend: "1949" — Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (IDP valid up to 1 year); "1968" — Vienna Convention (IDP valid up to 3 years).

An International Driving Permit must be obtained before you travel, and only certain countries may issue one to you — you cannot buy an official IDP from an unrelated country. Under the 1968 Vienna Convention it may be issued only by the Contracting Party where you normally reside and which issued or recognizes your licence — by that Party's competent authority or by an association it has duly empowered. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention it is issued by the competent authority of a Contracting State, or by an association that authority has duly empowered. Which body that is varies by country: a government agency in some, an authorized motoring club in others.
Separately, IDA offers a digital International Driver's Document — a translation of your national licence that you carry alongside it. It is not an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 or 1968 conventions by the body your country authorizes for that purpose, and it is not a certified, sworn or otherwise official translation: no authority certifies it, and where a country requires an official or certified translation by law, our document does not satisfy that requirement. It is a private translation meant to make your national licence readable at rental desks and roadside checks.
