Do you need an International Driving Permit in St. Kitts and Nevis?

An International Driving Permit has no legal standing in St Kitts and Nevis: the federation is not a contracting party to either the 1949 Geneva or the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (checked against the UN Treaty Collection participant list, 103 parties as of 2026-07-29, and the UNECE/Wikipedia party tables — St Kitts and Nevis appears in neither). Neither a foreign national licence nor an IDP authorises driving on its own. Every visitor must first buy a temporary St Kitts and Nevis driving licence, presenting the original foreign licence and a passport. Current fees: EC$62.50 for three months or EC$125 for one year. Rental companies that are authorised agents can usually issue it on the spot. An IDP may still be useful in practice as an unofficial translation of a non-English licence, but it does not replace the local permit.

• Tourists and short-term visitors: your national licence and an IDP do not authorize driving here on their own — for almost every origin, driving requires a document the destination itself issues. Is St. Kitts and Nevis a party to the 1949 or 1968 Road Traffic Convention?

St. Kitts and Nevis is party to neither the 1949 Geneva Convention nor the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. An official convention IDP cannot be issued in St. Kitts and Nevis, and convention rules do not bind it — licence acceptance is governed purely by local law and bilateral arrangements.

Why acceptance of your licence varies from place to place

Whether a foreign country accepts your driving licence hangs on a tangle of variables: three different road-traffic conventions signed decades apart (1926, 1949, 1968) — the oldest predates the United Nations itself, and only the latter two were concluded under it — countries at different stages of joining each (signed vs. accepted vs. ratified), licences printed in alphabets local police can't read, vehicle-category systems that don't line up between countries, document generations that may not meet a convention's format even when the country is a member, bilateral deals between individual states, and local laws that are looser in one place and stricter in the next. The same licence can be fine at one border and rejected at the next — even at the next rental desk. The International Driving Permit exists to cut through most of it: a standardized, multilingual presentation of your existing licence, with harmonized category symbols, that most officials can read at a glance. It doesn't replace your national licence or grant new rights — you carry both — and it doesn't guarantee acceptance: a handful of destinations still require a local permit alongside or instead of it, but for most it meaningfully improves your odds.

Where to get an International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit must be obtained before you travel, and only certain countries may issue one to you — you cannot buy an official IDP from an unrelated country. Under the 1968 Vienna Convention it may be issued only by the Contracting Party where you normally reside and which issued or recognizes your licence — by that Party's competent authority or by an association it has duly empowered. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention it is issued by the competent authority of a Contracting State, or by an association that authority has duly empowered. Which body that is varies by country: a government agency in some, an authorized motoring club in others.

• Travelling from St. Kitts and Nevis? St. Kitts and Nevis's IDPs are issued by Saint Christopher and Nevis Licensing Authority (Traffic Department). Official site. Driving rules in St. Kitts and Nevis tourists get fined for

• Mandatory equipment: No official seat-belt, child-restraint or mandatory-equipment schedule could be verified online for St Kitts and Nevis. Standard practice: wear seat belts, use appropriate child restraints, and keep the vehicle's registration and insurance papers plus your temporary local licence in the car.
• Drink-driving: More than 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood (0.08%) is the stated offence threshold. First offence: EC$2,000 and 12 months' imprisonment. Subsequent offence: EC$4,000 and 2 years' imprisonment.
• Speed limits: Drive on the left. No national speed-limit figures could be verified from an official source — obey posted limits, and note that narrow, steep, poorly lit roads with blind corners make posted limits an upper bound rather than a target.
• Buy the temporary local licence before driving — from the Inland Revenue Department or an authorised car-rental agent — and carry it together with your original foreign licence, passport, rental agreement, registration and insurance.
• Traffic drives on the left.
• After a crash, phone the police on 911 and do not move your vehicle.
• Expect potholes and unmarked speed bumps on minor roads, narrow rural roads with blind corners, unlit roads at night, pedestrians walking in the carriageway, inconsistent indicator use, and poorly visible road signs.
• Use only licensed taxis — identifiable by a yellow licence plate bearing 'T' or 'TA'. Taxis are not metered, so agree the fare first.
• Unrelated to driving but a genuine local trap: it is illegal for anyone, including children, to wear camouflage clothing — a EC$250 fine and 3 months in prison.
