Where to get an International Driving Permit in Gabon?

Obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Gabon is straightforward if you hold a valid Gabon national driver's license. For those planning a visit to Gabon, it is advisable to contact the relevant authority in your home country to secure an IDP before departure. However, if you are already traveling and do not possess the IDP, you may opt to have your national driver's license translated online. This method offers a quicker, more convenient, and efficient way to ensure you can legally drive during your travels.

The International Driving Permit is a translation of the national driving license into many languages. The first ID cards appeared in 1926, after the Paris International Convention relative to Motor Traffic. The International Driving Permit was also influenced by two other conventions in 1949 and 1968. The International Driving Permit is the same as the International Driving License.

We remind you that the IDP works only with a valid national license.

How to get an International Driving Permit in Gabon?

According to the Vienna Convention of 1968, International Driving Permits (IDPs) are authorized to be issued by national governments or designated organizations. In most countries, this function is carried out by automobile associations affiliated with the AIT/FIA, the police, or other authorized entities. To obtain an International Driving Permit in Gabon, you must possess a local license and apply to the relevant authorities here (please notify us if the link is not working). The cost and processing time for an IDP vary by country.

If you hold a national license not issued in Gabon, you must verify if your license permits you to drive and if you require an IDP. If an IDP is necessary, the only option is to order a translation of your driver's license, available either via delivery or as an electronic version (confirm with the rental car company if an electronic version is acceptable), for example, through our services.

For U.S. citizens with only a U.S. driver's license, you can obtain an IDP from AAA, but it must be done before traveling to Gabon!

International Driving Permit (IDP)Our sources disagree on whether an IDP is required here — check with the authorities before you travel, and see the row for your country of issue, in the table below
IDP types acceptedBoth — 1949 Geneva (valid 1 year) and 1968 Vienna (valid 3 years)
UN Road Traffic ConventionsParty to neither convention
Time limit for visitorsShort-stay visitors fall outside Order 00140/MT/2016 entirely: article 2 states the order applies to a foreign licence whose holder is authorized to stay in Gabon beyond three months.
Minimum age18 to drive — Gabon Ministry of Public Works / Land Transport, permis de conduire page: any person resident in Gabon and aged 18 or over may sit the driving test
Alcohol limitTreat the safe limit as zero.
Speed limitsDrive on the right and obey posted km/h limits. No official numeric speed-limit table was located; reduce speed for checkpoints, rain, poor inland roads and unlit traffic.
Emergency numberAmbulance: 117; depending on the mobile network, SOS Medecins: 1300, 0174 or 0880. Fire and police: 177. None of these numbers is guaranteed to be reliable, emergency help can be limited in places that are hard to reach, and operators may only speak French.

Do you need an International Driving Permit in Gabon?

Gabon is a party to neither the 1949 Geneva nor the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic - verified directly against the UN depositary status lists (1949: 103 parties, participants run France, Fiji, Finland, Georgia, Ghana... with no Gabon; 1968: 91 parties, no Gabon). No treaty therefore obliges Gabon to honour an IDP. Recognition is purely domestic: Gabon's own Direction Generale des Transports Terrestres issues IDPs, and current UK government guidance tells drivers to carry the IDP together with the original national licence. No Gabonese legal text specifying which IDP format is accepted was located, so both booklet formats are listed as a practical safe harbour, not as a treaty entitlement. Confirm the format with the rental company and, for long stays, with the DGTT.

  • Tourists and short-term visitors: carry your national licence together with the document named in the row for your country of issue, in the table below — for most origin licences that document is not an IDP, so read your own answer rather than assuming one.
  • Car renters: Carry the original licence, an IDP, passport and visa (or certified copies), vehicle registration, rental contract and insurance. If your authorized stay exceeds three months, carry the registration sheet as well once obtained.

No specific penalty for driving without the required document was verified from an authoritative source. Official source.

What side of the road does Gabon drive on?

Gabon drives on the right-hand side of the road, and overtaking is done on the left. Cars in Gabon are left-hand drive.

How long can you drive in Gabon with a foreign licence?

Short-stay visitors fall outside Order 00140/MT/2016 entirely: article 2 states the order applies to a foreign licence whose holder is authorized to stay in Gabon beyond three months. In practice this means up to three months' driving on the original foreign licence, carried with an IDP, and subject throughout to valid immigration status, rental contract and insurance. Note this is a stay-authorization threshold, not a rolling tourist day-count - the order's own trigger is the length of stay the traveller is authorized for, not days elapsed. (Gabon Order 00140/MT/2016, articles 2 and 3; UK FCDO Gabon guidance)

Is Gabon a party to the 1949 or 1968 Road Traffic Convention?

Gabon is party to neither the 1949 Geneva Convention nor the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. An official convention IDP cannot be issued in Gabon, and convention rules do not bind it — licence acceptance is governed purely by local law and bilateral arrangements.

Why acceptance of your licence varies from place to place

Whether a foreign country accepts your driving licence hangs on a tangle of variables: three different road-traffic conventions signed decades apart (1926, 1949, 1968) — the oldest predates the United Nations itself, and only the latter two were concluded under it — countries at different stages of joining each (signed vs. accepted vs. ratified), licences printed in alphabets local police can't read, vehicle-category systems that don't line up between countries, document generations that may not meet a convention's format even when the country is a member, bilateral deals between individual states, and local laws that are looser in one place and stricter in the next. The same licence can be fine at one border and rejected at the next — even at the next rental desk. The International Driving Permit exists to cut through most of it: a standardized, multilingual presentation of your existing licence, with harmonized category symbols, that most officials can read at a glance. It doesn't replace your national licence or grant new rights — you carry both — and it doesn't guarantee acceptance: a handful of destinations still require a local permit alongside or instead of it, but for most it meaningfully improves your odds.

Can you drive in Gabon with your country's licence?

This table is for tourists and temporary visitors. Moving to Gabon as a resident? Different rules apply — see the residents section below. Find your licence's country of issue below. Gabon is not a party to either road-traffic convention, so IDP acceptance there rests on domestic practice rather than treaty. For a short visit, drive on your original national licence and carry an IDP with it. The three-month figure that dominates Gabonese sources is a residence trigger, not a tourist allowance: Order 00140/MT/2016 applies only to holders authorized to stay beyond three months, who must register their foreign licence within three months of arrival and can face imprisonment and a CFA fine if they cannot produce the resulting sheet. Rules change — confirm with official sources before you travel. Last verified: July 2026.

Legend: "1949" — Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (IDP valid up to 1 year); "1968" — Vienna Convention (IDP valid up to 3 years).

What the Status column means on this page:

  • National licence OK — the destination lets a visitor drive on the national licence itself. The row for your country of issue, in the table below, gives the basis, and any period or condition that qualifies it.
  • National licence OK — IDP advised — the destination does not require an IDP for this licence, but carrying one is advised. The row for your country of issue, in the table below, gives the reason and any conditions attached.
  • Not established — the record does not settle whether you may drive here on this licence; confirm with the destination's licensing authority before you rely on it. The row for your country of issue, in the table below, says what could not be confirmed.
  • National licence OK — IDD/translation advised — the destination does not require an IDP for this licence, and no official convention IDP can be issued for it; carry an IDD or a certified translation instead. The row for your country of issue, in the table below, gives the reason and any conditions attached.

[a] Licence categories do not follow the convention A–E scheme — rental staff may ask for an IDP to map them.

[b] IDD = International Driver's Document, a standardized translation of your national driving licence. You can apply here: https://idaoffice.org/apply-now/.

Where to get an International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit must be obtained before you travel, and only certain countries may issue one to you — you cannot buy an official IDP from an unrelated country. Under the 1968 Vienna Convention it may be issued only by the Contracting Party where you normally reside and which issued or recognizes your licence — by that Party's competent authority or by an association it has duly empowered. Under the 1949 Geneva Convention it is issued by the competent authority of a Contracting State, or by an association that authority has duly empowered. Which body that is varies by country: a government agency in some, an authorized motoring club in others.

  • Travelling from Gabon? Gabon's IDPs are issued by Direction Generale des Transports Terrestres (DGTT). Official site. Gabon is party to neither road-traffic convention, so the permit is issued outside the UN convention framework and is not an official convention IDP — check that your destination accepts it.
  • Travelling from another country? Ask that country's driving-licence authority which body it authorizes to issue IDPs — a government agency in some countries, an authorized motoring club in others.

Separately, IDA offers a digital International Driver's Document — a translation of your national licence that you carry alongside it. It is not an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 or 1968 conventions by the body your country authorizes for that purpose, and it is not a certified, sworn or otherwise official translation: no authority certifies it, and where a country requires an official or certified translation by law, our document does not satisfy that requirement. It is a private translation meant to make your national licence readable at rental desks and roadside checks.

Moving to Gabon? Rules for new residents

A foreign-licence holder authorized to stay in Gabon beyond three months must obtain a fiche d'enregistrement (foreign-licence registration sheet) from the national centre for vehicle documents / DGTT within three months of arrival, and must carry it with the original licence. The French foreign ministry states the same three-month-from-arrival deadline for French licences. This clock is driven by the holder's stay authorization, not by a tourist day-count. Official source.

Driving rules in Gabon tourists get fined for

  • Mandatory equipment: Carry a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, catalytic converter, warning triangle, torch and a set of wheel chocks, and check the vehicle's lights, brakes, tyres and insurance before setting off.
  • Drink-driving: Treat the safe limit as zero. No current official public Gabonese BAC limit was located. No official drink-driving penalty table was located. Impaired driving can lead to arrest, prosecution and loss of insurance cover.
  • Speed limits: Drive on the right and obey posted km/h limits. No official numeric speed-limit table was located; reduce speed for checkpoints, rain, poor inland roads and unlit traffic.
  • Carry the original licence, an IDP, passport and visa (or certified copies), vehicle registration, rental contract and insurance. If your authorized stay exceeds three months, carry the registration sheet as well once obtained.
  • Official checkpoints are common; police will ask for your passport, driving licence and vehicle registration documents. Required vehicle equipment is a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, catalytic converter, warning triangle, torch and a set of wheel chocks.
  • Avoid travelling by road at night, as many roads are unlit. Road conditions in central Libreville are generally good but poor inland; a four-wheel-drive vehicle is needed on many inland roads during the rainy seasons (October to mid-December and mid-February to May). Keep doors locked and windows closed while driving, and park in well-lit areas.
