    • Northern Cyprus is not a signatory to either the Geneva, 19 September 1949 Convention on Road Traffic or the Vienna, 8 November 1968 United Nations Convention on Road Traffic. [1] [2]

  2. Recognition of the International Driving Permit (IDP)

    Northern Cyprus is not recognized as a sovereign state by the United Nations; therefore, it is not a party to either the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic or the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. [3]

  3. Duration of driving with a foreign license (+ IDP) if resident or non-resident

    • Non-residents:
      - Tourists' driving licences are valid for 90 days from the date of entry into the country. [4]
    • Residents:
      - At the end of 90 days, their visitor status expires. Within 30 days of the expiring of the visitor status, the person must apply to get a driving licence in our country. [4]

Driving tips for Northern Cyprus:

  • North Cyprus drives on the left side of the road.
  • The maximum allowed urban speed limit is 30-50 km/h. The maximum allowed rural speed limit is 65-80 km/h. The maximum permitted speed limit on highways is 100 km/h.
  • The maximum permitted drink drive limit is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood.
  • The minimum rental age is 21.
  • There are no toll roads in Northern Cyprus.
  • If you are going to go to Northern Cyprus, make sure you have a first-aid kit, a fire extinguisher as well as two warning road triangles.
  • Seat belt is a must.
  • In Northern Cyprus, you are prohibited to drink, eat and smoke behind the wheel.
  • Talking and texting while driving is forbidden.
  • Keep in mind that gas stations in Northern Cyprus are open from 8 a.m.to 10 p.m.

    Since Kosovo is not a party to either convention, the recognition of International Driving Permits (IDPs) is based on national laws and bilateral agreements rather than international treaty obligations.

  3. Duration of driving with a foreign license (+ IDP) if resident or non-resident

    • Non-residents:
      - Foreign nationals are permitted to drive with a valid driver's license issued by their home country for a period of up to 12 months. [7]
    • Residents:
      - A foreigner who has been granted temporary or permanent residence, a Kosovo citizen returning from another foreign country, or personnel of diplomatic representations, consular representations, missions of foreign countries, representatives of international organizations, foreign trade representations, traffic, cultural, and other foreign offices, or correspondents, can drive a vehicle on the basis of a foreign valid driver’s license for a period of up to one year from the date of entry into Kosovo. Driving tips for Turkey:

  • Driving in Turkey is on the right side of the road.
  • Seat belt is a must. Otherwise, you will be fined on site.
  • The maximum permitted speed limit is 50 km/h on urban roads, 90 km/h on extra-urban roads and 120 km/h on highways.
  • The minimum age to drive is 18. The minimum age to rent a vehicle is 21.
  • Use a hands-free kit. Otherwise, you will be fined on site.
  • You are not allowed to drink and drive in Turkey. The maximum permitted alcohol level is 0 mg per 100 ml of blood.
  • Avoid night driving.
  • You must carry two warning road triangles, a first-aid kit, a fire extinguisher in case of emergency.
  • At intersections, you are allowed to give way to the right.
