  1. Participation in the 1949 and/or 1968 United Nations Conventions on Road Traffic

    • Czech Republic succeeded to the Geneva, 19 September 1949 Convention on 2 Jun 1993 (d). [1]
    • Czech Republic succeeded to the Vienna, 8 November 1968 Convention on 2 Jun 1993 (d). [2]
  2. Recognition of the International Driving Permit (IDP)

    • Czech Republic recognizes International Driving Permits (IDPs) both 1-year (1949 Convention) and 3-year (1968 Convention). [3]
    • All licenses issued in the European Union are accepted. [4]
  3. Duration of driving with a foreign license (+ IDP) if resident or non-resident

    • For non-residents:
      • Foreigners on short-term visit may rent a car and drive with a valid foreign driver's licence for up to 6 months in the Czech Republic. [6]
    • For residents:
      • EU/EEA licenses are valid indefinitely in Czech Republic. [4]
      • The exchange of an EU driver's license to a Czech one is voluntary and not obligatory. But if you decide to do this you will need to prove 6 months of Czech fiscal residency. [5]
      • Should you have a driving license from a country which does issue an EU standard driving license, you are obliged to exchange it to the Czech one within 90 days of the start of your official stay in the Czech Republic. [5]
      • Japan and South Korea have a bilateral agreement with the Czech Republic. As long as your driver's license is translated officially from Japanese or Korean to the Czech language, you can exchange it with no problems. [5]
      • Countries that meet European driving license standards: Albania, Serbia, Russia, Ukraine, UK (After Brexit, UK citizens with Czech Official Residency are still able to exchange their driver's licence, as it meets EU standards!), Brasil. [5]
      • Countries that do not meet European driving license standards: USA, India, UAE, Australia. [5]
    • For EU/EEA license holders:
      • A driving licence issued by a member state of the EEA is recognised throughout the EEA and can be used as long as it is valid. [4]
      • If your driving licence expires during a trip abroad, it automatically becomes invalid and may not be recognised in other countries. [4]
      • The exception is for those holding EEA driving licences issued in exchange for a non-EEA licence. [4]
