  1. Participation in the 1949 and/or 1968 United Nations Conventions on Road Traffic

    • Jersey is a Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom. The declarations made by the States of Jersey are identical to those made by the United Kingdom upon signature and on deposit of its instrument of ratification. [1]
    • Jersey ratified 1968 Geneva Convention on 28 May 1958. [1]
    • Jersey ratified 1968 Vienna Convention on 26 February 2019. [2]
  2. Recognition of the International Driving Permit (IDP)

    United Kingdom recognizes both 1-year (1949 Convention) and 3-year (1968 Convention) International Driving Permits (IDPs). [3]

  3. Duration of driving with a foreign license (+ IDP) if resident or non-resident

    • For non-residents:
      - You can drive as a visitor up to 12 months if you have a valid driving licence from another country for the category of vehicle you're driving on Jersey roads. [4]
    • For residents:
      - If you have a foreign driving licence and become a permanent Jersey resident or move here for more than 12 months, you must get a Jersey driving licence as soon as you move to the Island. [4]
      - You can exchange your foreign licence for a Jersey licence if it's issued from one the countries listed below. Not all licence categories are exchangeable:
      Alderney, Andorra, Australia, Austria, Barbados, Belgium, British Columbia, British Virgin Islands, Bulgaria, Canada, Cayman Islands, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, North Macedonia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Ukraine, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Zimbabwe.       - If you hold a licence from a country that is not listed, you must pass the theory and practical driving tests in Jersey to receive a Jersey driving licence. [4]
      - You can only exchange full valid driving licences. You cannot exchange provisional licences. [4]

Driving tips for Jersey:

  • The island drives on the left side.
  • The maximum drink drive limit is 80 mg per 100 ml of blood.
  • To rent a car, you must be at least 20 years old and to drive a car you must be 17 years old.
  • The maximum allowed speed is 40 km/h in both rural and urban areas.
