Driving tips for Abkhazia:
  • The traffic rules in Abkhazia are not very different from Russian ones. One fundamental difference is in the variety of fines. An important point: a driver's license is withdrawn in case of violations of any traffic rule. You can get the license back only after paying a fine. However, it's not so easy thing to do. There are no terminals in the country, Russian bank cards are rarely accepted. Remember that the fine can be paid only in a district department of traffic police. After that, you can get your driver's license back.
  • Be careful! Traffic police can fine you for violation that you didn't commit. Thus they provoke you to pay a bribe. Tip: don't respond to provocations, keep calm. Defend your rights competently. Don't confront.

  • Road signs have worn off for many years. They are completely absent on some road sections. The driver can only use his intuition.
  • Local drivers are well-known hotshots. They neglect seat belts, like to run a red, forget about the existence of turn signals, park anywhere. Don’t take an example from them. Follow the traffic rules.
  • Road conditions in Abkhazia leave much to be desired.

If you don’t pay the fine within a month, you will be automatically deprived of a driver's license for 1 year. In case of repeated traffic violation, it is withdrawn for 3 years.
  • The country has the following speed limits: 20 km/h in densely populated areas, 60 km/h in the built-up area, 90 km/h outside built-up areas, as well as on the highway. The maximum permitted speed on motorways is 110 km/h.
