  • Driving in Japan is on the left side of the road.
  • Seat belt is a must.
  • The minimum age to drive in Japan is 18. The minimum age to rent a car is 21.
  • The speed limits for Japan are as follows: 30-50 km/h on urban roads, 80 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on highways.
  • Hands-free is obligatory.
  • Japan is one of those countries that imposes a ban on drink driving.
  • Younger children must not sit in the front seat if without an appropriate rear-facing child seat. You can transport older children in the back seat, however, before make sure you have a booster cushion and seat belts.
  • Japanese drivers are quite polite and organized. Thus, driving is a real pleasure. Stick to the driving rules and everything will be great.
  • The rush hours in Japan are from 7 to 9 in the morning and from 4 to 7 in the evening.
  • In winter, Japan has much snow and ice. Thus, take necessary precautions and use suitable tyres as well as snow chains.
  • Road signs are written only in Japanese. Thus, if you don’t speak Japanese, that can be challenging.
