  1. Participation in the 1949 and/or 1968 United Nations Conventions on Road Traffic

    • Iran is a Contracting Party to the Vienna, 8 November 1968 United Nations Convention on Road Traffic but is not a party to the Geneva, 19 September 1949 United Nations Convention on Road Traffic.
    • Iran signed the 1968 Vienna Convention on 8 November 1968 and ratified it on 21 May 1976. [2]
    • Iran has not signed or acceded to the 1949 Geneva Convention. [1]
  2. Recognition of the International Driving Permit (IDP)

    • Iran recognizes International Driving Permits (IDPs) issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, which allows validity for up to 3 years. [2]
    • Visitors must carry an IDP alongside their national driving license when driving in Iran. The IDP should be obtained in the home country before arrival. [3]
  3. Duration of driving with a foreign license (+ IDP) if resident or non-resident

    • For non-residents:
      • Non-residents (e.g., tourists) may drive in Iran using a valid foreign driving license along with an IDP for up to 6 months from their date of entry. Foreign nationals are eligible solely for third-class driver's licenses and motorcycle licenses, valid for one year. [3]
    • For residents:
      • Residents who obtain permanent residency or a long-term visa in Iran must apply for an Iranian driving license after 6 months. This process may require both a theoretical and practical driving test unless a reciprocal agreement allows for direct exchange. Travelers in possession of International Driver's Permits may drive in Iran. [4]

Driving tips for Iran:

  • Iran drives on the right side of the road.
  • The minimum driving age in Iran is 18 years.
  • Seat belt is a must.
  • The third-party insurance is mandatory.
  • It is prohibited to drink and drive in Iran. Stay sober!
  • The maximum allowed urban speed limit is 60 km/h. The maximum permitted rural speed limit is 95 km/h.
  • Keep in mind that local drivers quite often neglect traffic rules.
