  1. Participation in the 1949 and/or 1968 United Nations Conventions on Road Traffic

    • Andorra is set to become a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic on September 25, 2024. [1]
    • Andorra does not appear on the 1949 Geneva Convention list.
  2. Recognition of the International Driving Permit (IDP)

    • Andorra recognizes IDPs.
    • The validity term of the IDP recognized will be up to 3 years, as per the 1968 Convention, once Andorra's participation becomes effective.
    • The 1949 IDP (1-year) is not recognized by treaty, although local authorities and car rental companies may accept it on a discretionary basis if no other document is available.
  3. Duration of driving with a foreign license (+ IDP) if resident or non-resident

    • For residents:
      • New residents must exchange their foreign driving license for an Andorran one within one year of obtaining residency. [2]
    • For non-residents:
      • Tourists can drive with their valid national license for the duration of their stay, typically up to 3 months. [3]

Driving tips for Andorra:

  • Driving in Andorra is on the right side of the road.
  • The minimum age to drive is 18.
  • Seat belt is a must.
  • The maximum permitted drink drive limit is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood.
  • The speed limits in Andorra are as follows: 50 km/h in populated areas, 60-90 km/h on rural roads.
  • You are not allowed to transport children under the age of 10 in the front seat. Use an appropriate child restraint system instead.
  • Hands-free is a must.
  • You are to have a warning road triangle, spare bulbs as well as a reflective vest in your car.
  • The third-party insurance is a must.
  • In case of any traffic offense, police enforcers may ask you to pay a fine on the spot.
  • You are obliged to use appropriate winter tyres in winter.
  • We also recommend you to have a first-aid kit and a fire extingauisher.
  • Avoid night driving.

  • International Driving License has no legal status.
  • All valid driving licences in English should be accepted. Acceptance of driving licences that are not of the European Communities model cannot be guaranteed therefore drivers may wish to voluntarily update them before travelling abroad.

  • Children who are under 12 should be transported in an appropriate seat or restraint system. The same is about children sitting in the rear seats.
  • You are to carry two warning road triangles as well as a reflective vest.
  • Make sure you have a spare pair of glasses if you have eye problems.
  • You are allowed to horn in urban areas at night only in case of emergency.
