How to get a International Driving Permit in Serbia?

According to the Vienna Convention of 1968, International Driving Permit are authorized to be issued by national governments or organizations to which these functions have been delegated. In most countries, this is done by automobile associations affiliated to the AIT/FIA, the police or other organizations. To get an International Driving License in Serbia, you must have a local license and apply to the authorities responsible for this (we try to keep the information up to date, let us know if the link does not work). The cost and timing of issuance differs from country to country.

If you have a national license not issued in Serbia, you need to check if you have the right to drive with your license and if you need an IDP. If you do, the only way out is to order a translation of your driver's license with delivery or an electronic version (check with the rental car company if the electronic version will work), for example with us.

Driving tips for Serbia:

  • Serbia drives on the right.
  • The minimum driving age in Serbia is 18 years. At 17 one may drive a car only with guidance and direction from parents.
  • To rent a car in Serbia, you must meet the following conditions: 1) aged at least 21; 2) have 2+ driving experience.
  • Seat belt is always a must.
  • The maximum allowed speed in cities is 50 km/h, on open roads — 80 km/h, on express roadways — 100 km/h, and 120 km/h on highways. In school areas, slow down to 30 km/h.
  • The maximum permitted drink drive limit is 30 mg per 100 ml of blood.
  • Always yield the way to the trams.
  • Hands free is a must.
  • Make sure you have a fire extinguisher and third party liability insurance.
  • You are not allowed to transport children under the age of 12 in the front seat.
  • To transport children under the age of 3, use restraint systems which correspond to the child's weight and height.
  • Dipped headlights must be on all year round.
  • Make sure you have a first-aid kit, warning triangle, spare bulbs (not required for cars with xenon), spare wheel, towing cable (no less than 3 m in length), reflective waistcoat (you are not allowed to leave the car without it).
  • Winter tires are obligatory from the 1st of November to the 1st of April.
  • Safety warning devices are forbidden.
