Driving tips for the Republic of Artsakh:

  • In the Republic of Artsakh, traffic flows on the right side of the road.
  • The only country you can arrive in the Republic of Artsakh from is Armenia.
  • The border with Azerbaijan is closed while the border with Iran is not built for people's access. СIS citizens do not need a visa to visit the Republic if they have valid international passports (or substituting documents). Citizens of other countries and non-citizens need their entry visas issued by the representatives of the Republic of Artaskh in Armenia.
  • All visitors who are non-Artsakh citizens must register with Artsakh consular service of Ministry of Foreign Affairs based in Stepanakert. Permitted periods of stay and travel routes are to be defined during registration. Without this registration you violate residence of foreigners in the Republic which may result in expulsion from the country as well as confiscation of photo/video data, other printed and information products.
  • Stamps in the passport, registration in the Republic of Artsakh, other documents, receipts, photos or another evidence of staying in the Republic may result in sanctions (from travel ban to imprisonment) in Azerbaijan, while entry into the territory of the Republic of Artsakh by foreigners without a permission from Azerbaijani authorities is illegal.
  • The minimum driving age is 18 years.
  • Stay away from the landmines. Do not pull off the paved road.
  • Do not visit the demarcation line of Armenian-Karabakh and Azerbaijani troops and moreover, do not try to cross over to the opposite side! That's dangerous.
  • The main inner roadways Yerevan — Lachin — Stepanakert — Ağdam (mountain) and perpendicular to it Martakert — Ağdam — Martuni (flat) run almost through the whole territory of hostile Azerbaijan, though the latter starting from 1993-94 does not control these lands. You can drive on these roads safely. Buses, route taxis and other vehicles drive with no military convoy.
  • It is quite easy to navigate the road, however, many road signs are in Armenian. Keep it in mind!
  • Generally, roads in Nagorno-Karabakh are not that bad. However, you'd better rent an offroader to drive on rural roads.

  1. Participation in the 1949 and/or 1968 United Nations Conventions on Road Traffic

    • At the time of the notification of the extension of this Convention to Jamaica in 1959, the Cayman Islands were a dependency of Jamaica, and the extension of the Convention to Jamaica therefore extended it automatically to the Cayman Islands. [1]
    • Hence Cayman Islands is a contracting party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, Jamaica having acceded on 9 August 1963. [1]
    • The Convention continued to apply and still applies to the Cayman Islands, which, when Jamaica became independent remained a territory for whose international relations the United Kingdom is responsible. Hence Cayman Islands is not a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. [1] [2]
  2. Recognition of the International Driving Permit (IDP)

    • Cayman Islands recognizes International Driving Permits (IDPs) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention framework, valid for up to 1 year from the date of issue. [3]
  3. Duration of driving with a foreign license (+ IDP) if resident or non-resident

    For non-residents:

    • It is not necessary to obtain a visitor's permit. You can drive in Cayman provided you have a valid driver's licence and insurance coverage.
    • Visitors who have a full, valid driver's licence from a Convention country can drive for six months in Cayman.
    • Visitors who have a full, valid driver's licence not from a Convention country can drive for one month in Cayman provided that they only drive a motor car, a truck not exceeding 8,500lbs, or a motorcycle under 125cc. [4]

    For residents:

    • If you are a legal resident in Cayman you can drive on Cayman's roads if you: [4]
      • Have an International Driver's permit. As long as it is valid, you are exempted from the requirement to hold a Cayman driver's licence and can, therefore, drive legally on it.
      • Have a full, valid domestic driver's licence from a Convention country. You will be able to drive in Cayman for up to six months before having to pass the written theory test to be issued with a Cayman driver's licence. If you wait longer than six months, you will also have to pass the practical road test.
      • Have a full, valid domestic driver's licence not from Convention country. You can drive for one month in Cayman, but only a motor car, a truck not exceeding 8,500lbs, or a motorcycle under 125cc. To legally drive thereafter, you must obtain a Cayman driving licence by passing both the written theory and the practical road tests.
      • Have a full Cayman driving licence. Cayman driving licences are only valid for either three, five or ten years. You will need to get your licence renewed promptly or you are effectively driving without a licence and therefore driving illegally. If caught without a valid licence, you will be suspended for a year.

A permit from the Immigration Authorities in Samoa is a must if you are going to leave and re-enter Samoa. To obtain this permit, you must have medical and police reports (30 and 100 tala respectively). The cost of permit is NZ$20. Then you must get an official permit from the mayor of the village allowing you to visit atolls. This procedure usually takes at least two weeks and sometimes even more.
  • Take into account that Tokelau motor vessel is often full. However, if you are strongly determined to visit Tokelau, you'd better take a one-way ticket to Samoa and wait until your permit is ready. Even if you already have a permit, have just a pair of weeks reserved to find a suitable berth on board of Tokelau motor vessel.
